2014 Equus award nominations
10 years 10 months ago
The nominations for the Equus awards have been announced. No surprises yet, but some categories will test the judges. My thoughts:
2 yo filly: the 3 Gr 1s In KZN have been won by 3 different fillies, plus carry on Katie won the colt's nursery. however, Majmu's win in the Gr 2 fillies nursery was the performance of the season. I would give it to her, although Carry on Alice would be a no surprise as the winner. A case could be made, of course for Same Jurisdiction.
2yo colts: Any one of Guiness, Afrikaburn and Harry's Son could get it since they each won one gr1,but probably will go to Harry's Son on consistency in the races he did not win.
3yo fillies. Can't look past In the Fast Lane
3yo colts. A triple crown winner vs the winner of the Cape Derby, Daily News and July. I would be tempted to give a joint award, but if I had to choose would go Legislate on his July performance in open company.
Older filly/ mare Beach Beauty
Older male. Yorker, despite the fact that he could only win in Jhb.
Sprinter. Via Afrika although would not be upset if they give it to Copper Parade
Miler. Cape Town Noir. The Queens Plate is the defining race.
Middle distance. Very tough category. Legislate gets my vote, although Yorker could get it. The winner of this category probably defines horse of the year.
Stayer: Hot Ticket clearly the best. Only beaten when giving tons of weight away.
Horse of the year. Legislate, but not a foregone conclusion.
