Pied Piper of Kimberley

Just read an article in the Sporting Post in which Shaheen Shaw(TT presenter) calls horses who beat the much vaunted Tommy Gun "rats and mice". Read on. Always thought this young man was too big for his boots with some of his "know-it-all" comments.

Legend, true punters pal who is always the only TT employee to stand up for the punter

Amazing that one comment of bad taste can turn people against him, Shaheen is a true Gentleman that would give you his last Rand if it would help.

He's also the first to hand out praise to trainers , jocks , horses and owners when praise is justified.

Total over reaction to a flippant comment

If my memory serves me correctly, he preceded his comment by saying that he was talking out of pocket...

I got a lot of respect for Shaheen

He says it like it is and always provides useful information for the punter

He has his opinion on the show and is always honest in his opinions even if it means disagreeing with trainers comments

What shaheen actually said

"If one looks at the FORM of Tommy gun in comparison to the FORM of the rest of the field it was far superior, making the others FORM look like rats and mice." The semantics were about the caliber of form, not horses. SS

Thank God he did not use the word " SOUPMEAT " as that could have had our International viewers believing that here in Africa horse-meat was standard fare and could have had the Horse Care Unit, SPCA and other animal right's activists all up in arms and breathing fire. :P

Among racing folk, it is common to coin the phrases.........." It beat a field of squibs ", or how about the rats and mice connection when saying " It's running in the blind school ".

Now if I were a writer with a lot of time on my hands and so concerned with what signals we were sending out to the 30 odd countries, I would use the time, energy and space to convince them that we are not entirely a nation of idiots and semi-idiots when we see fit to give our horses names like.............. GOAT.............CHICKEN............DONKEY..............ROYAL DONKEY ?

Type in the search function in the column " HORSE " in Formgrids and you get the following names, all progeny of the mare HELLO DOLLY [ now Dolly was a sheep, the cloned one I think ]..................... GOAT..............ANOTHER GOAT.................BILLY GOAT.

Then there's CHICKEN...............CHICKEN RUN..............PRAIRIE CHICKEN.

Ever heard of................. THE MOUSEKATEER? :P

He wasn't wrong in his assumption of the race. And anyone who read it any differently was throwing darts
