Did I read right...punters should distance themselves from their bookmarker and invest on the tote???Why to add to the Profits of Phum?....Why ask the punter to take a stand when we treated like dirt...Anyway now that the knives are out we stand back and see who draws blood...

Maybe it's time to start a punters and owners association ?
Ask bookmakers to be part of it, contribute to a levvy and let the new association distribute the funds.. A bit like the UK levy board
Benefits
punters and owners get a voice
Punter disputes settled by a panel
Racing benefits from the levy

We had the Irish model on the site many years ago, it included a heavy input from the punters.

We are talking more about punters representation rather than just owners in many cases most owners are also punters

Personally,I think that punters can agree on less than any other area of racing even-the threads on the forum, over the years, shows that clearly.
I doubt you could get punters to agree who should represent them!!!

TAKEOUTS IN RACING.
I stand corrected but the take outs in racing are as follows
Bookmakers average 11% GP on their turnover. Some provinces average far less.As far as i know the lowest takeout is Western province and the highest is maybe Kzn.WP is in some months as low as 4%.Dont forget they have a risk of losing it all .Bookmakers are known to commit suicide.
The tote can't lose at any price!!
Takeouts are as follows
Win/Place 18%
All exotics 25%(jp,P6.pa etc)
Sports betting 33%(One of the highest take outs in the world)
If the operators ran their business like lean machines like bookmakers do with no wasted
overheads racing would not be in as much trouble as it is.One point do we need to send Bon etc to talk about The Epson Derby at a massive cost when we have some of the best commentators in the world doing it for free to the rest of the world.I think we are all sick of trying to help the operators save money for racing.I think they are all at the pigs trough feeding themselves silly.

In practice , the bookmakers takeout from punters is the % overround in any given race, and is sometimes is as high as the tote , but without the cost.
We need to keep the comparison fair.
For me the plus side for bookmakers was that during the war with the operators they continue to care for their customers and the operators chose to punish theirs!!!!

when you go to hollywood durban they offer you tote facilities yet you still see some people taking the open bet at the bookmakers.instead of blaming the bookmakers all the time the operators should be looking at themselves.just maybe because you go to hollywood they aircon, you can buy something to eat and drink and their toilets are clean.go sit at your local tote and tell me which of the two facilities you would spend more time at???
