Question: St Patrick's Cross in the Union Jack?

If Northern Ireland has adopted the St George's Cross then why is the St Patrick's cross still in the Union Jack? And, whatever happened to the Welsh contribution to the Union Jack?

Wales had been part of The kingdom of England for centuries, so there was no need

so if they get independence, the blue bits come out.
And Scotland will end up with a pretty boring flag. Any chance of making one triangle into tartan then just to zest it up a bit?
