Costs involved in owning a horse

Hi Clanners,

I was wondering if any one knows the +- cost of owning a horse. Like how much an average horse would cost and how much an average trainer would cost per month and vet fees etc? Would it be viable to get a horse between 10 to 15 people?

Thanks in advance for any answers :)

If your wanting a fun hobby that costs next to nothing a 10% share won`t break the bank

your initial outlay will make the biggest dent

If your trainer charges R6000 per month i would add 15% on top as a contingency

so for your 10% R750 should cover the out lay

you win a Maiden in PE THAT WOULD cover 4 months bills
you finish 2nd in PE 1 1/2 months costs

etc etc

Thanks,

When you say 10% do u mean buying 10% of a horse that some one already owns?

well you mentioned buying a horse with 10 others

so i just gave you all a 10th share :)

ps its easier to limit the amount of owners

There are other costs involved but i will let others tell you about them

It depends on whether you are buying the horse and handing it to a trainer to put together for you

Some trainers prefer 50% shares whilst others go for 25% and some 10%

More the owners - the more admin work for the trainers to apportion the training fees and other costs - vet bills / farrier costs

you need to select your trainer and start discussions

alternately you can purchase a a share of a horse already in training with a trainer

100% Bob

A syndicate is also a good way to get involved in multiple horses due to smaller % shares

Guys like LG and Van Zyl have their own syndicates and that to me is the best way to start - Many hungry sharks out there waiting for fresh meat -
