Harry's Son among Cape Classic enties

Grade 1 winners Harry’s Son and Afrikaburn are among the big names among the 38-strong entry for the R250,000 Grade 3 Cape Classic over 1400m at Kenilworth on Saturday 25 October but both are drawn badly.
Harry’s Son, the only entry trained by KwaZulu-Natal-based Paul Lafferty, won the Premiers Champion Stakes at Greyville in July. At Greyville on Vodacom Durban July Day, Afrikaburn took the Durban Golden Horseshoe for Dean Kannemeyer, who has four entries and won the 2011 Cape Classic with Depardieu.
Afrikaburn ran on well for second to Reim in the Kuda Matchem (Grade 3) on his reappearance at Durbanville last Saturday. However he is drawn at No 32 and Harry’s Son is drawn No 35.
MLJet, unlucky when dead-heating for third in the Premiers Champion Stakes, is one of four entries from the Vaughan Marshall stable. Marshall last won this race with Play Catch 10 years ago. MLJet is drawn at No 9.
Joey Ramsden, successful with Red Ray last season, has the biggest entry and his seven horses on the list include Kingvoldt, arguably the best Cape-based two-year-old not to travel to Durban last season.
Ramsden has also entered Brutal Force, at R4.5 million the highest-priced horse sold at auction in South Africa. Brutal Force has the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes at Kenilworth on 22 November as a major target and will run for the second time in his career at Durbanville on Saturday.
Justin Snaith has six entries, including Heartland, who made a big impression when scoring by almost 10 lengths on debut. This full-brother to Jackson escapes a penalty.
The conditions of the race are quite severe as penalties are cumulative and apply for anything more than a win in a Maiden Plate.
Supplementary entries will be accepted on Wednesday 15 October and declarations fall due on Monday 20 October.

The Cape Classic (Grade 3), to be run on Saturday 25 October at Kenilworth Racecourse over 1400m is always the first big three-year-old clash of the Summer of Champions Season and has attracted a small but top quality field this year.

The nine runners include the Vaughan Marshall-trained Jet Master colt MLJet, who was one of the most exciting juvenile colts of last season, noted for his effortless acceleration. The Joey Ramsden-trained Dynasty colt Act of War swept all before him during the Cape winter last season and will also be making his reappearance. Anton Marcus has been booked to ride him. The exciting Justin Snaith-trained Dynasty colt Heartland, who won his debut by close to ten lengths, is another high profile runner. Muzi Yeni replaces Marcus aboard.

The Listed Woolavington Handicap is the other feature event on the day and will appeal to staying race enthusiasts. Good horses of the like of Coltrane, Gothic and Desert Swirl are involved in that race.

A Pinnacle Stakes event over 1100m has attracted some top class sprinters as well as other horses that will likely be using the race as a pipe opener. The field includes the like of Happy Forever, Tevez, DeKock, Castlethorpe, Cap Alright and Kingvoldt.

A Pinnacle Stakes race over 1400m includes horses of the like of Jet Explorer, who has made a courageous comeback from a shocking fall, Astro News, Readytogorightnow, River Crossing and Blarney Bay.

A MR 92 Handicap over 1000m for fillies and mares will see the reappearance of the Grade 2 Post Merchants winner Varikate.

The Cape Classic is run on the tight Winter Course, which has a shorter straight than Summer Course, and jockeys don't waste time sending their mounts for home. This often has the effect of producing a cavalry charge like finish, which has the crowd on their feet. The tightness of the course also means that a genuine 1400m horse can win the race, as was the case three years ago when Depardieu beat the brilliant Gimmethegreenlight. The winner in 2012 Chave De Oura was also probably best suited to the 1400m trip and last year's winner, the much vaunted Red Ray, used his speed to simply draw away from the field.

The gates open at 11h00 and this is a not-to-be-missed day of racing. Reserve your table in the Somerset Room for a buffet lunch at R220 per person. To book your table contact Micaela (021) 700 1600. After an exciting day’s racing, join us in the Pocket Power Room to watch the nail-biting Currie Cup final.
