I think this is a great idea

Louis The King – 2013 Triple Crown champion
An innovative alternative first leg option for prospective Triple Crown and Triple Tiara candidates is bound to attract a wider spectrum of national ability to the Highveld’s showpiece prizes for 3yo’s. Two of the Cape’s 3yo classics have been included as optional first legs to the traditional R1 million Gr1 Betting World Guineas and the R500 000 Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas.
The R7-million SASCOC Triple Crown for 3-year-olds is the richest series of races in Africa and was won last season by Geoff Woodruff’s Black Minnaloushe colt, Louis The King.
For the first time this year, the Grand Parade Cape Guineas and the Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas are included as possible first leg qualifiers.
This will create excellent opportunities for Cape and KZN challengers to qualify and is likely to enhance the level of competition and credibility.
On the flipside, it also effectively gives horses two chances of qualifying.
The Triple Crown comprises the following:
Leg 1: The R1-million Grand Parade Cape Guineas (Grade 1) 1600m (Kenilworth Saturday 20 December 2014) OR Leg 1: The R1-million Betting World Gauteng Guineas (Grade 2) 1600m (Turffontein Standside Saturday 28 February 2015)
Leg 2: The R2-million SA Classic (Grade 1) 1800m (Turffontein Standside (D/N) Saturday 28 March 2015)
Leg 3: The R2-million SA Derby (Grade 1) 2450m (Turffontein Standside Saturday 25 April 2015)
A bonus of R2 million will be paid to owner/s of the horse that wins all three legs of the Triple Crown
The R3.5-million / R4-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Triple Tiara for 3-year-old fillies is the richest series of races for fillies in Africa.

Tiger Ridge’s 2013 Triple Tiara winner Cherry On The Top
The Triple Tiara comprises the following:
Leg 1: The R1-million Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas (Grade 1) 1600m (Kenilworth Saturday 6 December 2014) OR Leg 1: The R500 000 Wilgerbosdrift Fillies Guineas (Grade 2) 1600m (Turffontein Standside Saturday 28 February 2015)
Leg 2: The R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic (Grade 1) 1800m (Turffontein Standside (D/N) Saturday 28 March 2015)
Leg 3: The R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks (Grade 1) 2450m (Turffontein Standside Saturday 25 April 2015)
A bonus of R1 million will be paid to owner/s of the filly that wins all three legs of the Triple Tiara.

Agreed. Not a new concept - it was derived to give the highveld horses enough time to recuperate to compete in the remaining two legs. Not sure why it was stopped.
For me - the triple crown should be:
- the Cape Guineas
- the SA Derby
- the Durban July (even if for older horses)

Absolutely, the triple crown should only be Gr1 races, what a joke to have a Gr2 as a first leg. I agree, Cape Guineas 1600 Gr1, Classic 1800 Gr1 and Daily News 2000 Gr1 in 3 different provinces, now there is a challenge and a real triple crown for trainers to plan and operators could make a huge thing out of this and get a US1$mil bonus and make it open to colts and fillies only for breeding purposes, NO geldings allowed as in the UK Classics!

triple crown winners have to be tested from 1600m to 2400m in order to wear this prestigious crown..i think its a fantastic idea and im encouraged by the cape participating in Gauteng and was thrilled to see the mike bass yard being successful on the weekend in jhb...with snaith and the marshall yard following soon the Gauteng season will become top class..its all about embracing competition not closing the door on it,,at the end of it all RACING IS A SPORT WHERE EQUINE ATHLETES COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER AND LET THE BEST ONE WIN

Of course. But the Durban July is now the pinnacle race for 3yo's even if older horses also run.

No. I am saying I would like to see the July as a triple crown leg even if older horses run. So what if they do? The best three year olds run in the July.

the TRIPLE CROWN is known world wide as races for 3yos so lets leave it at that ..if you want to have a racing culture you cannot chop and change and fcuk with tradition like this country has in the last 20 years ..names distances the tracks they were ran on change so often in this 3rd world run racing country that a culture tradition or a fan following will never be created...when investec got the opportunity to sponsor the greatest race in the world Bernard kantor summed it up by saying here we had a chance to put our name next to a race that is centuries old with tradition....
