2014 he has either lost the support of the big yards or has chosen to cut back on his riding engagements.
He no longer travels outside of KZN
i would speculate without knowing that his weight is an issue
and since he no longer rides for big yards the quality of horses he rides has dropped and so would his success rate.
This could be true I dont know. What I was trying to say before the know it alls got all heated under the collar because I dared give an opinion, is that he has has not delivered on his earlier promise. At one stage I thought he would be better than his cousin.

The sign of a good Jockey is CONSISTENCY !!
If he is dedicated, you will see his in his PERFORMANCE and STATS.
IF NOT, You get 1) Brandon Lerena 2) Gavin Lerena 3) JP vd Merwe 4) R Simons 5) D Davids.
to name a few
In my opinion they don't give a FUCK !
Look at Weichong Mawing this weekend ! What better example do you want ?

Was the horse in question ever going well enough? Possibly not the clearest run and possibly the wrong option in running but when he did see daylight, did he really quicken? I will watch it again but that was my first impression.

I think Brandon is okay. Friday night, regards Black Jaguar, maybe the trainer could have suggested a change of tactics, tried racing the horse a lot handier from draw 1. The horse was coming back in distance which is not the easiest thing to do against out and out sprinters.
He's turn to have a red letter day at the races will come, and guess what, we will all be singing his praises. I'm sure the young man is doing his best, it's not the end of the world, let's box on.

Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy.

I don't think you can compare Ferraris, St John and Laird with Dixon, Rivalland, Roberts etc - Weichong rides for way stronger stables (He actually only had THREE winners in July and August according to form grids - That's the time when many top stables are resting and injecting)

Re: Brandon Lerena

Similarly to what happened when I dared to ask if there was VALUE in acquiring a box at Turffontein I now get attacked because I dare state my opinion on a jockey. It really gets tiresome when people do not read what is said before slinging off.
In my OPINION ( I admit to being wrong on many occasions ) Brandon Lerena has not developed the talent he showed when he was an apprentice. It was my OPINION at the stage when he and his cousin were apprentices that he would become a better jockey than Gavin. The stats show that this was not the case. Some reasons have been given for this and they might well have merit. It is my OPINION that his ride on Black Jaguar on Friday evening was not his greatest. In my OPINION he got left and then rode a tactically poor race on the horse. In that field, from that draw, the result was not satisfactory regardless of whether I had an interest or not. It is my OPINION that this is not an isolated poor ride and this OPINION is supported by other clan members. I have been watching race riding for 30 years and it is my OPINION that the better jocks make these poor decisions far less frequently. No amount of abuse and chirping from the know it alls will change my OPINION. Funnily enough, my OPINION has support amongst some clan members. Lets leave it at that. Unlike others on here, I respect alternate OPINIONS.
One thing that I will be clear on is that my OPINION should not be seen as an attack on Brandon Lerena. My OPINION is that he seems to be a nice youngster who comes across as respectful. We are all entitled to our OPINIONS even if we differ on them, surely that is what a forum is all about?

Ok we now have facts from the Trainer himself. He coughed a number of times post race and it was thought that he might have bled but he was scoped and had not. There was kick back from the poly track found there and probably was the reason for the coughing. If you scope a horse post race on the turf, often varying amounts of grass, sand etc will be found. He had no complaints about Brandon's ride.
