Improvements in racing from a punters viewpoint
10 years 7 months ago
My favourite stalker accuses me of just being negative about racing so I have given some thought to what the improvements have been for me in the last 25 years. Some improvements cannot be accredited to the operators but this is an improvement post so lets get on with it. In no chronological order :-
1. Information - the internet has made us a global village. I peruse many overseas sites that give pointers on the chances of horses from far flung places like the UK, France, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore and Mauritius. At this stage nothing for Ngong but I must admit to not having looked too hard.
2. Betting choices - 25 years ago it was a challenge to get a bet on in Kimberley nevermind Kranji!
3. Tellytrack/IGN - The only way to get visuals before this was to be on track yourself. Many an afternoon was spent running from my office in Simmonds Street to the rooms in Harrison street to hear a race over the "blower". No visuals and in most cases standing room only!
4. Online bookmakers/tote - log on have a bet log off. We are spoilt for choice. Previously you would have to schlepp to the course or your local bookies/tote to have a bet.
5. Bookies facilities - most are home from home with comfortable surroundings you would happily spend an afternoon at. A far cry from the dirty smoky facilities offered 25 years ago. The tote has unfortunately remained as it was.
6. Sports betting - hard to believe these days when you can get a bet on a result in the Armenian 4th division. Horse racing was the only game in town then.
7. Racing available 7 days a week 364 days a year. 25 years ago you had a midweek - generally Wednesday - and Saturday meeting. Often you would have to choose your bets carefully on a Saturday as you could have PE, Natal, Cape and Transvaal racing on at the same time.
Feel free to add your thoughts, I am sure that there are many other examples to add.

Today, if you are a long-term losing punter (which no-one is on ABC), you can recoup your losses by buying shares in Phumelela.

Punters life improved decades ago with the availability of Internet / websites
The problem now is that racing is having to compete with far more popular sports for the leisure spends

The taxation of bets on horses also gives sports an unfair advantage over racing
