poly and turf on the same day is such a BAD idea, your race times become virtually useless...

Syd Laird always said" the only people who should worry about time are the people in jail". In certain ways it is true as it depends a lot on the pace the race is run at. The further the race the less times mean IMHO. 1000m are different.

so why do we time every race then?

Keniza999, as I said the shorter the race the more store you can put on times. 1000m is a race where they go nearly full pace the whole way and times can help in most instances. In a 2000m, if there are 2 maiden races one after the other and the 1st race is run 2 seconds slower than the 2nd because the jockey in front cantered and then sprinted for home and in the second they went a good pace from the jump, would that mean the winner of race 1 is 2 seconds worse than race 2? His 400m to finish would also be quicker than the 2nd race but the whole race would be slower. Over distance race times must be taken in conjunction with how the whole race was run as just because it is faster, it does not necessarily mean the horse is better than the 1st horse.

I mostly agree with you and yes pace and the going sometimes throws out times but in general better horses register better times regardless of the distance or pace of the race. when we are able to compare horses who ran on the same day we can easily tell if the time is valid or misleading. if for example a group race and a maiden race were run in a similar time the error might be obvious to see but what conclusion will you draw if the maidens raced on poly and the group horses on turf?
