2014 Melbourne Cup tote turnover – Down again across the nation
Clinton Payne - 4/11/2014
The recent trend of pari-mutuel pools on the Melbourne Cup continued in 2014 when turnover reduced in tote pools across the country on Tuesday.
Overall turnover figures on the Victorian TAB, NSW TAB, and Tattsbet totes decreased across the vast majority of popular wagering types in 'the race that stops a nation'.
The reduction was slightly higher than three percent in 2014 based on the $147,777,685 turned over in the betting pools of 2013.
On win and place betting, the Victorian TAB figures dipped slightly by 1.25 percent while in NSW the win pool was up more than $200,000 in 2014. Tattsbet win and place turnover figures dropped by 2.26 percent.
First4 pools continue to grow in the Victorian TAB, and NSW TAB while surprisingly quaddie pools dipped dramatically in each of the three pari-mutuel pools.
The Victorian TAB quaddie pool dropped by a huge 18.06 percent while NSW TAB and Tattsbet were down 6.84 and 12.77 percent respectively.
Here is a comparison of the 2014 turnover figures against those of 2013, 2012 and 2011.

Maybe tabcorp can realise the ridiculousness of their campaign to classifiy punters as "shoppers". Hmmm the slogan "lets go shopping" obviously hasn't caused much interest or stimulation to punters.
Heretohelp
Gee there's a surprise, a huge drop in Quaddie turnover across the all TAB's. Any wonder it's hard enough getting the winner of the Cup or a quaddie on a off season Saturday meeting plus when the TAB help themselves to a 25% take out on this bet form why would you throw your money away. I might consider having a small Flexi on this type of bet if they had a zero take out on the day.
cutts
143 million turnover on the TAB's and they still can't allow for emergencies for the cup. Executives get your head out of the sand, do you REALLY think YOU control racing, you make plenty from it with your salaries how about fixing the problem.
MJG
After reading the article they mention only tote takings so they obviously don't include fixed odds....wouldn't that be a fair obvious reason tote figures are dropping as more punters are jumping on fixed odds?? I know I use fixed odds a lot more than tote these days
macca24
Australians want to win a Melbourne Cup and they want the cheque that goes with it. Dont delude yourself
Mr Chan
Gerry Harvey really does have a bit of a hide complaining about a lack of Australian-bred horses in the Cup; his stud (Vinery) doesn't stand a single stayer
laarmond
could someone please explain to me how Ava's Delight, race 10 ,is not banned from racing ??? 22 starts, would have bombed the start badly in a least 12 of those starts, the punters need more protection from the Stewards regarding these barrier rogues
Wither
Crazyray- spot on. A cup horse costs the same to feed as a Braidwood maiden. Have to increase ownership base.
borisranting
Corps pay plenty of tax already, stop demanding Protectionist action (omen bet of the year!?) and make the totes more competitive, after all, they are betting fixed odds too now. Simple economics tells you a drop in takeout will be rewarded by higher turnover. Combine the tote pools, remove the great advantage of corp bookies and see turnover grow again.
crazyray
Combine the pools and restructure the tax on corporate bookies so we can create more revenue to go Back Into the industry. But please no increase to prize money in Sydney or Melbourne I think $85k a race is plenty when Country venues race for $15k
waubic
And while ever they keep bringing overseas horses here for the cup turnover will drop. Commonsense dictates that they put on an International Stakes and invite a limited number of horses to compete against the Australians. Doing it they way they are is only thumbing their nose at the owners, trainers and horses that keep racing going the other 50 weeks of the year.Take some of the $ away from the Cup to start it. Australians want to win a Melb. Cup. Overseas only want $$$$$.
