Ridiculous jockey change rules?
10 years 7 months ago - 10 years 7 months ago
How do these trainers get away with these ridiculous rules. Declare a moderate jock - then Delpech. No declaration yesterday Sundays Sister - suddenly striker on wtf - how do they get away with it? surely the market price needs to reflect that jockey and hence why should a bet like that be honoured? Makes zero sense to me!

Im almost 100% sure that there is a "like for like" rule that is being completely ignored here..I can clearly remember that it was enforced some time back and on many an occasion horses were scratched due to "no suitable jockey available" surely if backing a horse under the impression that ur danger is to be ridden by a "lesser" rider only to find out after your bet is struck that he/she has been replaced by a senior rider should be reason enough to have your bet canceled..
Give everything but up!

You are partially correct Titch. There used to be a rule like this. One perfect example was that you could not change a jock for an appie as your horse would then carry a lesser weight. This rule was annulled a few years ago and the new rule is anything goes as long as the declaration is done before I think 9am on raceday. This has seen a number of moves where a Sampson of the world is replaced by a Strydom. Some moves have worked, some havent. Personally I think the old rule was better for punters.

TRAINERS ARE URGED TO CHECK EQUIPMENT/DETAILS
OF THEIR HORSES IN THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION
PRIOR TO 09:00 ON RACEDAY AND NOTIFY ANY CHANGES
TO THE NRB/STIPES TIMEOUSLY

I'm sure the like for like rule is enforced in the last 24 hours , before that you can change jock anyway you like

Very interesting & relevant topic imo
Simple answer if the rule applied 24 hours before then bookies should only be allowed to price up 24 hours before, that will stop all this jockey change nonsense
Punters have never and will never be given a fair chance, they are just seen as a parasite yet they contribute so heavily towards the industry

And how exactly does one decide which jockey is like which jockey? Who grades the jockeys in this regard? Do make it so that you can only replace a top 10 jockey with another top 10 jockey? You may not replace a jockey with a claiming apprentice after 9am on race day. The jockey changes are readily available on the sahorseracing website as soon as the final fields are released. You have no excuse not to keep yourself informed on the changes, as it is readily available on even the most basic cell phones that are data enabled - it does not even have to be a smart phone. At the time of scratchings and declarations, some jockeys are already engaged on other horses, and then for whatever reason, the horse is scratched/ eliminated for whatever reason. That jockey once again becomes available. It is the owners' and trainers' prerogative as to who they want to put onto the horses that they pay thousands for, every month. I cannot see a problem if the jockey chamge happens before 9am on a race day.
So once again I ask: Who decides who is like who? What are the requirements for this sort of grading?
