Hi all,

Thanks for the thread. Nice to see some discussion on the subject.

These girls have been around for a while now and find it bizarre - I thought the practice of having 'eye candy' around just for the sake of it had gone out with ox wagon.

Usually I don't find them much more than a curiosity, but Sunday's outfits were particularly, ah, arresting shall we say, and a LOT of people passed comment. I've attached 3 pics for you to make up your own minds.

I'm sorry, but I honestly do not see what value they bring. I think they are entirely pointless and I stick by that opinion.

Other folks are most welcome to think otherwise, but I'd be most interested to hear what value people feel these girls bring to the table?

Also, I do say plenty of nice things, unfortunately the negative stuff seems to be much more memorable. When things are done well, I do say so. But it is true that I disagree with quite a lot of what goes on in local racing and so I don't get the opportunity to be positive very often. And as I seldom say nice things when I don't mean them, that is likely to continue until I either have a drastic change of mind, or something actually changes. Neither of which are likely in the foreseeable future. So there we are.

I do not race In A Rush under the lap. If I was ever lucky enough to own a horse like that, I'd have no reason to hide it. I have had three registered racing Thoroughbreds and they were all owned outright by me, as are my non-Thoroughbreds (I'm not very good at sharing). All my Thbs raced under my name and in my colours (Infamy, Impi and Sergeant At Arms).

I bred Infamy and Impi myself out of a Chief Warden mare that I'd loved as a child and they are my kids. Sergeant At Arms was a 'gift pony' who I originally owned half of. He was supposed to be a sale prospect, back in the days when I thought I was tough enough to sell a horse, but he never grew and as there hadn't been much interest on the sale for him, we kept him and raced him and eventually I took him over completely. As I said, I'm not terribly good at sharing. He's now retired and is still with me. As are Infamy and Impi. I don't sell my kids.

In A Rush was bred by Peter Choice and he's by Windrush out of a full sister to my Chief Warden broodmare. This means he's very closely related to my Impi child, so I have naturally always been interested in him.

In A Rush was foaled in the same year as Impi and Sarge. Peter and my dad are friends from years ago when my dad lived in KZN. I like to run my colts in groups of 3 and so Peter sent me In A Rush to run with my boys and prep for the Cape yearling sales. I was also prepping Sarge and a filly for that same sale. In the end, In A Rush sold and the other two came home again. Peter retained a share in In A Rush (as he still does) and so I've always been able to stay connected to the horse.

I really enjoyed the time he spent with me as he was always a big, cuddly lump - exactly the sort of horse I like - and he got on particularly well with Sarge. I've always had a big soft spot for him and have always followed him as I do with any horse I have any dealings with. Unfortunately he isn't mine and never has been - you are quite welcome to check the NHA records.

Funnily enough, while In A Rush turned out to be a 10-time winner, my Impi never amounted to much on the racecourse, but that's just how life goes. I still love my boy and thoroughly enjoy owning him.

tsk tsk Rob! penalty for you! lol

I don't have issue with having Bunny Girls and their role in the 'buying behaviour'. But I do agree with Robyn bringing it up - there is a fine line between dignified, cute and cheap. Think Emirates' sideline gals. Very neat and in Suits, beautiful women beautifully groomed. The image of professionalism (I do not speak for conduct, only what the eye sees from a distance). We refer back to the dress code issue previously hotly discussed on another thread. Perception and aspirational expectation.

You have to reflect out what you want to attract. I find the garments in Robyn's pics too casual. Short can be ok but must be more 'corporate', for want of a better word? A couple of weeks ago 'les gals' wore long dresses which were more appropriate, only my opinion. Then, on QP day there are a myriad of 'les gals' floating around in jockey's silks in blue+white - very classy.

Us lot doing the up and down on the field in between the winning post and parade ring with cameras etc - wearing flats and jeans, we're not there representing the brand in image. But these girls are. They are on pics, and on TV. Perhaps they can have a uniform of some sorts? just a suggestion...(am I a prude?)
