Greetings from the Press

Howzit mates. Its been absolute ages since I posted on here, glad I could still remember my password... Anyway, I came across some literature I once compiled last year. I started writing a short story on my upbringing into a family of racing fanatics. Heres a small snippet of it based on a true example about 20 years ago, just sharing with you all... (FYI - Thatha is a calling name for Grandfather in a South Indian home) B)

“Thatha, I want to tell you something...” I whisper to my Grandfather as I gently tug his sleeve. I can almost taste the strong old spice cologne that emits from his shirt.
He looks down at me, his glasses resting on his nose, and proceeds to reduce his race-card.
“Yes, boy...” he responds curiously.
“Thatha, no matter what you and Dad do at the course today, please back Empress Club!” I feel a sense of satisfaction after making that statement. As if I had given him privileged information. Truth be told, I was 5 years old, and it was the only horse name that I knew. Nonetheless, I felt very proud of myself and granddads response further enhanced my pride.
“You think so boy?” He smiled back at me with keen intent, as if I had found a gem. “Alright, I will back him”.
Now as far as a recall Empress Club was a filly, but granddad had a knack of referring to every horse as a “him”. But from what I remember back then, she was no ordinary filly. She was a household name. Even a 5 year old kid knew about her, enough so to give his seasoned punting grandfather the tip of the decade.

Cheers Bob.

Ill continue with it in my spare time and share it with the clan. I shall call it "FOALED".. The old man is late now, but has left me with my fondest memories in this game.

Just something about this sport that turns father and son into best friends, that bond is inexplicable.

Oscar knows what I am talking about. :)
