Most of you have no idea about the groom problem.
I cant carry on reading this. So here goes.
1/ Most grooms don't have a grade 10
2/ Most grooms have no horse skills
3/ Most grooms have no interest in the horse or the racing, its just a job. Ask them to stay on after hours with a problem, no chance
4/The TOP grooms in all yards are very well paid, certainly a lot more than R600 a week
5/ All grooms at the major training centres have free accommodation, lights ,water and refuse removal with security.
The grooms package with all the above is certainly not poor.
And any trainer will tell you that there has never been a groom who has given notice to leave!!! One day here the next gone.

so why do trainers employ grooms like you have stated in points 1, 2 and 3? Cheap labour obviously. So why do trainers employ grooms who have no horse skills? Shocking to hear.

Then hire grooms with higher qualification than grade 10.. Pay them according to education qualification..add working over time as a pre requisite for the job as well as paying em for extra time..for the record i dont care about the stock i look after at work either but i still nget paid well n i do my job. Im sure one or two head grooms dnt account for the masses. I jus cnt understand justifying em being grade10 educated thus being paid badly..im sure alot of jocks and even trainers dnt hv matric

Head shaking, really can't believe that folk can use grooms being lazy or shite as a reason to pay them so poorly.

Do something about it advertise you pay more, and attract the good grooms

I have never had a groom from SA with Grade 10 apply for a job. A few from Zim who worked for awhile and then disappeared. We had a grooms school here that taught them to read, write, ride and about horses. They closed through no grooms wanting to do the extra work and study. The standard of groom has dropped by about 70% since when I came into the game years ago. My top guys are on way over the R600 per week and also get the free extra,s as James mentioned. Out of necessity we take on grooms that are not up to what we would like but the horses have to be taken to track, fed and boxes cleaned. I could go on but think I have said enough for now. I tear my hair out every day with some of them. A groom from a next door stable has just let a horse run out of its box because he did not close the door as he should and it chased and kicked Flyfirstclass. Complete negligence and completely useless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is not good Craig, not good at all but isn't completely unexpected.

Hope Fly is ok.

As far as the grooms go, you kind of get what you pay for, or you pay for what you get......

Horrible situation for all concerned.

Bob some of the trainers in PE. Grooms only work 5 to 6 hours a day .
And refuse to look after more horses to make up the 9 hr day including 1hr break !!! Now what do you do .!!!
Pay more for less work .
Guaranteed your builder mate gets his 9 hr day to pay that wage
From Mark
I agree there wages are still not enough to support themselves and families

That's £11 a day,that's about 10% of what our labourers get..
Is that relevant to house prices,is a 4 bedroom house 10% the cost of one in UK,taking a like to like area.

DTF if you have a two down two up here and you owe nothing on it and you sell it you would be able to buy a 5 bedroom house with a pool big garden double garage in a nice area in SA.
