The Interprov Rider Cup will be one of the big attractions of Champions Season when a dozen of the country’s leading jockeys from the different provinces go head-to-head in a four-race competition on Mercury Sprint (Gr1) day, Saturday, July 18.
Four riders each from KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the Western Cape respectively will represent their provinces and compete for total prize money of R100 000.
Greyville patrons will be in for a treat of world class riding and topping the bill will be the R750 000 Gr 1 Mercury Sprint to be run at Greyville for the first time since the sale of Clairwood.
“The intention is to make this an annual Interprovincial Challenge that showcases the best of the best on Mercury Sprint day,” said Gold Circle’s Racing and Marketing Executive Graeme Hawkins. “This is something we have wanted to do for a while now.”
“We love the idea of 12 of South Africa’s top jockeys doing battle over a four-race competition. The Cape, Gauteng and KZN will each be represented by four of their leading riders in what is intended to become an annual attraction,” said Hawkins.
“Teams will be chosen using the National Log as at the end of May 2015 as a guide and the Interprov Rider Cup is sure to provide a fitting backdrop for the all-important WFA Grade 1 Mercury Sprint,” concluded Hawkins.
Prize money will be distributed as follows:
Winning team: R48 000 (R12 000 for each rider) plus a trophy and mementos.
Second Team: R32 000 (R8 000 for each rider).
Third Team: R20 000 (R5 000 for each rider).
