He was losing many horses to other trainers. I've always wondered why. ABC coined the phrase "we've been matchetted" meaning it was the lesser fancied stable mate who won.

Ya Mac , but when the money was down the punter could follow, trainers are finding it tough going out there

Think being a trainer has become more difficult as the years go on. The "smaller" trainers aren't able to match the firepower and get the support from the more prominent owners in our game because of the many satellite yards that are now in operation. There are many examples like Paul at many centres around SA at present... A new owner is also more inclined to go to a successful trainer like MDK, ST, GW and the likes as they feel they have more chance of living the dream. If rumours are true and Matchett is shutting shop then it'll be a sad ending to a trainer who has trained some classy horses in the past...
Richard Fourie is the greatest...

To add to the post is that some trainers do not know where and how there bread is buttered. Some of trainers just want to handle the owners and are under the impression that the owners are idiots.

This is far from the truth. Matchett is not shutting up shop. Phumelela scratched all his horses from racing this Weekend due to personal reasons. It's really sad to know rumours of this nature gets Published on ABC.

Just a copy n paste from the Ken thread...
Both cards imo are tricky, might be decent viewing in terms of being competitive but too many options at not great prices for me so, apart from a few small accies, I think I'll pretty much take the day off. Although, I have also done this as a very small idiot patent...
K R4 Waterways
T R6 Gentleman Jack
T R9 Clean Cut
Be(s)t of luck to all
