Grooms to get a share of winnings

News 24
Cape Town - Following more than a year of discussion and consultation, the role played by grooms in the South African horseracing industry will be formally recognised and rewarded from June 1, 2015 onwards.
From that date 1% of prize money for all races in South Africa will be paid to grooms and it’s a big step forward in giving the backroom men of the sport the recognition they deserve.
Horseracing and tote betting operators Phumelela Gaming, Kenilworth Racing and Gold Circle, as well as the Racing Association that represents racehorse owners in Phumelela regions, are totally committed to the transformation of the industry and have been the chief drivers of formalising a share of prize money for grooms.
In Phumelela regions the concept was only finalised after lengthy discussion and debate by the Industry Liaison Committee, which comprises representatives of owners, trainers, jockeys, grooms, Phumelela and the sport’s regulatory body, the National Horseracing Authority. Prominent trainers including Mike de Kock, Sean Tarry, Joe Soma, Geoff Woodruff and Mike Azzie were also consulted.
According to the trainers consulted, many trainers already pay 1% or more of prize money to grooms, but these payments will now be facilitated formally through the national prize-money administration system.
The thinking behind the new scheme is that in many instances it will replace existing informal bonus payments to grooms by trainers, who generally recover such monies from owners.
Obviously, trainers giving more than 1% of prize money to grooms can continue to do so, but the horseracing operators will only facilitate payment of the basic 1%.

most trainers pay the grooms more than the 1% in "presents" already
some trainers will find it hard to hand the money over, like they did at turffontein when phumella gave the trainer cash to rehome the grooms
Just pay them a proper wage, stable staff should be more important to the trainers than the owners.... charge more

Its really amazing how our money as owners get spent without our authority. We are the people that spend the money buying the horses, we are the people that pay the trainers. What the trainers pays the grooms or how the trainer pays the groom has nothing to do with us as owners. We get handled by the trainers by not knowing what direction the trainer is taking our horses. I could not go to my employer and tell them that because they turned over e.g.R2,000,000.00 this year so I want x amount for a bonus and a share of the profits. They the employer and us the owners worked hard during our years to get the little that we have to give to people who some of them do not deserve because they capitalize on what is going on around them. My view is that us as owners should stop buying and paying the trainers and let this rubbish turn into turmoil and we sit back and laugh at these idiots that are demanding. My suggestion is get out of the industry and find another solution of earning a living.

I think it's really more amazing that grooms get paid less than a good night out

Tottenham, this is not Phumelela, Gold Circle, Kenilworth racing or the trainers. This is a directive from The Department of Trade and Industry and is over and above the 1%+ that most trainers are already paying the grooms( assistants and stable employees presents are not included in this original percentage) as a present and this initiative is for grooms only and not assistants or stable employees. This is to be split equally between all grooms in the stable.

Craig as per usual you miss the point here. Decisions are made without any consultation with the owners. Kak en betaal !!
Can you imagine me going to my client and telling him I need 1% of our contract value paid out to my workers ? He would laugh at me, why ? Cause he doesnt employ my workers I do.
Most owners pay far more than 1% to their stables as "presents" for winning. Do the grooms recieve their share ?. Having said this I foresee another can of worms being opened up here for problems to arise. Top grooms get all the top horses, will they get all the money ? Will they recieve their monies ? ( who will monitor this ?). Will the current "present" system fall away ? (If so wont the grooms recieve less ?)...........etc etc
Government determines minimum wage and if the trainer feels this is not acceptable (which I can understand) then it is his prerogative as their employer to "up" their wage or not. Not the owners !!
The minimum wage should be increased for the grooms to an acceptable level and if this means increases in training fees so be it. To impliment some half baked scheme doesnt make any sense to me.

I am not suggesting that grooms don't deserve a reasonable deal ,but this method can be likened to govt. legislating how much I should tip the refuse truck,at Xmas!

If they don't charge training fees they will starve to death if they have to rely on a percentage of winnings with all the soupmeat around.

Durb, training fees to high? They should be double what they are imo
If trainers earned a proper living then grooms also could

Relative to the stakes ,they are too high!..........and for as long as Saftote have the mandate to create and collect stakes, under the existing management, the present model is doomed!
