CATHY GANNON has been fined £290 by the stewards at Newbury after tweeting a picture complaining about the standard of food offered to jockeys riding at Friday’s fixture.
The rider took a photo of two dishes appearing to contain chickpeas and chicken and tweeted them with the words: “This is the quality of food at @NewburyRacing this is are [sic] fuel #athletes.”
The stewards later issued a report, which read: “Following a report from the clerk of the course that Cathy Gannon had taken a photograph on her mobile phone from within the jockeys’ changing room during racing, which she later put on Twitter, they interviewed the rider and took evidence from the clerk of the course.
“Having heard their evidence the stewards found the rider in breach of rule (D)33.1 and fined her £290.”
The rule states no rider may use a mobile telephone in the riders’ changing rooms or elsewhere on racecourse property.
Paul Struthers, Professional Jockeys Association chief executive, tweeted: “Fined £290 for taking a picture after you've finished riding and tweeting it after leaving the racecourse. #pathetic.”
For the equivalent value of the fine, Gannon could have bought 29 servings of spinach ravioli at the Newbury branch of Italian restaurant chain Strada.
