Hey Clanners,

So i got a couple of my mates to join me for a meeting at the track another day and they rather enjoyed it. now they all talking about Purchasing a Horse, So as i know there are a lot of owners on this forum i thought i'd assist my mates in how to get started.

so here goes. Whats the best affordable method to purchase a race horse and can i go about it. are there trainers in WCP that specialise in helping new comers to race horse owning out (with advice on do's and dont's and such things). Surely my mates can't just phone up any old trainer and go "I wanna buy a horse make it so" lol.
again thanks for reading and any future replies.

I would talk to Brett Crawford, unfortunately Stan Elly is retiring..... I think with Brett or one of the smaller yards you could have some fun unless you are looking to spend 500k up at the bigger yards you wont get a look in....

Nah, although my mates want to purchase a race Horse they are not willing to spend big money, these are people that wanna spend less for big returns, lol.. So i would prefer a smaller yard for them to start out.. interestest might fall away after a few loses, which is kinda why i first want to get all the correct info and estimated prices to present my mates. Would hate to waste trainers time.

I would buy a horse elsewhere and move it to the cape ( premium prices) or lease a horse

spend less for big returns...if that's the attitude or your mates don't own horses ever..unless you go into owning horses with the attitude of whatever you get back is a bonus you wont enjoy it and you will frustrated and angry...on top of writing off the money you pay you must have plenty patience as well...go into ownership with your mates attitude you guys wont last 5 minutes ..its a pity cos ownership can be great fun IF you go in with the right attitude..horses are no investment to the man in the street..and if any trainer tells you otherwise they are bullshiting you....

pirates as per usual hits the nail right on the head - don't expect anything and just enjoy the experience if you are lucky enough to find one that can actually run a bit; myself as a small-time owner had one or 2 horses with Eric Sands - loads of experience, treated me fair and as a smallish yard you can at least be sure of individual attention :)

After initial purchase price and vet bills, a decent trainer will charge a monthly fee of about R7k...
R10k if you and your friends help!
