RICHARD JOHNSON is blazing a Tony McCoy-like pace in the jump jockeys' championship as he pursues what would be a richly deserved first title having finished runner-up to the great man on no fewer than 16 occasions.

Two months into the new campaign, Johnson , who was successful on three of his four rides at Perth on Thursday, has already emulated McCoy in one respect after replacing him as president (jump) of the Professional Jockeys Association, and with 48 winners already on the board, 25 clear of Sam Twiston-Davies, he is enjoying his best start to a season.

"It's going well and fingers crossed I can keep it going for another ten months," said Johnson, who has more than 2,800 career successes, eclipsing Richard Dunwoody, John Francome and Peter Scudamore, all of whom won the title at least three times.

"I'm not doing anything differently, but it's obviously a bonus without AP around and I've managed to pick up a lot of mounts for the likes of Gordon Elliott, who AP and the injured Jason Maguire would otherwise have ridden. Tim Vaughan and Charlie Longsdon have also made a good start to the season and you just need to be riding for the right people, wherever that may be, and my agent Dave Roberts does a brilliant job."

Although holding a sizeable advantage over the chasing pack that also features Brian Hughes, Aidan Coleman, Harry Skelton and Tom Scudamore, Johnson modestly played down his new-found status as No.1 in the rankings.

He added: "I'm not quite sure I feel like that yet, and there is still a long way to go. Four or five of the lads have all made good starts and you need a little bit of luck with injuries and everything else.

"Staying in one piece is a key part of the job and, while things have been going well, the championship is a marathon and I'm not taking anything for granted."

Johnson has the chance to bring up the half-century on Friday as he has six rides at Newton Abbot.
