The irony is that, the more they have stripped the assets of the local industry, the more the value of the shares has increased.................It is with that conflict of interest in mind, that I'm amazed that "P" still manage to convince some that they are good for local horseracing.

35 000 shares traded for R650 000. At a market cap of about R1.5bn that's just over [strike]4%[/strike] correction 0.04%. Significant? Maybe

I would guess these are the shares, from an employees share scheme, forming part of his remuneration package, and would have to be redeemed, on leaving!

HORSE racing and alternative gaming counter Phumelela’s cautionary notice has hardly stirred sentiment.

The company’s shares were unchanged on Tuesday in rather scrappy volumes — which perhaps (unfairly) reflects the company’s status as the Cinderella of the local gaming sector.

The nature of the Phumelela cautionary is anyone’s guess as the company has shown some determination in recent years to diversify away from its traditional tote business with sports betting, limited payout machines and other alternative gaming services.

But the smart money offers long odds on the chances of Phumelela clinching a significant, needle-moving transaction in the consolidated South African gaming space. Recent local deals — such as Phumelela’s investment at Interbet — are certainly not game changers, especially in the short term.

More likely, it seems, Phumelela would be keener to play another hand offshore or in Africa (despite rather unhappy developments in Nigeria). This could be undertaken by a merger or partnership rather than a full-blown takeover.

Then again one should not lose sight of the fact that Phumelela offers rather good value — trading at a trailing earnings multiple of less than 15 times and backed by steady cash flows. Global suitors — especially with a weak rand in play — might feel it’s a worthwhile wager for a buyout offer on Phumelela.
