Flirting Around

Flirting Around (5 February 1971–1993) was a Kentucky-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A specialist sprinter, he showed some promise when winning one of his three races as a two-year-old. In the following year he established himself as one of the best sprinters in France, winning four races including the Prix du Gros Chene, Prix de Meautry. As a four-year-old in 1975 raced only twice, but was rated the best sprinter in Europe after winning the Prix de Saint-Georges on his seasonal debut and then travelling to England to record a five-length victory in the King's Stand Stakes. He was retired immediately after his biggest win and became a successful breeding stallion in South Africa.

now we have a three yr old filly making a debut.

dunno how the owners got this thru???

The mighty Wolf Power by far the best offspring of Flirting Around. Who can ever forget his devastating turn of foot and how he was disposed of under instructions of a top trainer in Kzn only for Ricky Maingard to condition the horse into one of the greats of the S.A. turf.

It was with a tinge of sadness that I discovered courtesy of pedigreequery that the great grey Wolf Power died in the USA in 2002 at the age of 24. :(

Aah, but Big Buck's, UK's retired jumping champion, is Big buck's with an apostrophe :).

Today, Golden Horn, was also big bucks to some :( .

Check out on Pedigreequery - in Australia there was a Sea Cottage registered not too long after ours and they had the audacity to vehemently complain about our Black Caviar.

There are lots of Nijinksy's and some Frankel's who made it onto Pedigreequery and probably many more who didnt.

I'm not saying its OK but it happens the world over not just SA.

technically the horse can have the same name if he is born in a different country and out of a different sire+dam.
But if in the same country, you can only use the same name again once the original horse has died (exact spelling match).
Special cases such as BLACK CAVIAR or FRANKEL etc have to be applied for via route already mentioned above.

ahem, WOLF POWER and OVER THE AIR can hardly be deemed global legendary horses that justify a security on the name?

Wolf Power is on the protected name list, but I dont know if it is the South African one. End of the day our NHA suppose to submit the names in. I never go through the whole list but, Horse Chestnut and Pocket Power not in there. I did see Empress Club and Politician though.
