SA Tote vs The Open Bet

After reading the thread about Bettingworld's tote platform I wanted to open a seperate thread about this topic as it a been PGE's bugbear for years now.

Instead of taking the bookmakers to court, why have PGE not taken the simple route of winning back customers?

Contrary to PGE's beliefs,we are not a bunch of clueless idiots who don't understand the industry. It is in fact the administrators of the game who are the clueless bunch.

Contrary to their beliefs,we know all about the fact foreigners get rebates, whilst those resident in SA can't get them. Why is that? How do we know this?Well,I'm in London and have been betting on the tote on Betfair.Ironic hey, considering nobody except the customers wants Betfair, and yet it is the only place punters can get rebates on SA racing.I still don't get exactly how the rebate works on Betfair, but I've been getting about 5% back on turnover.I think there is a threshold, maybe about 5000 pounds a week(R100 000) in order to qualify for this, but at least it's available here. Why not in SA?

Bigger foreign players are getting much bigger than 5%,but they are much bigger and just like any bulk buyer they are therefore entitled to more imo.

Why is there no such system in SA?A rebate chart could be established, and as you hit each new threshold, one would be entitled to more. Why is this not doable?

The reason bigger players play the open bet as opposed to the tote is that,

a)They expect that the bookmaker will hold onto the bet and not put it onto the tote, thus producing a bigger nett return to the player if he hits a big dividend.

b)The bookmaker systems have better betting platforms than the tote does, allowing customers to stack up bets and put them through in a batch. Why does the tote not have a similar system?

Why not win these customers back by giving them incentives.Again, contrary to your beliefs,we'd like hard cash into our accounts, not invites to go sit at a table at the Met or July.No serious player wants to go to these events anymore, because anyone worth their salt is playing online, and it's impossible to get onto the internet at these meetings.

Things have gone well in recent years for PGE.

The share price is up at R18.80 today.Profits are over a 100 million a year.Staff in the upper echelons of the organisation are earning salaries they never thought possible, never mind the share options. All looks bright and rosy.

The only certainty in life though,IS THAT THINGS CHANGE.

There are many examples of Fortune 500 companies who have finished up going bang.

Instead of patting each other on the backs with 'a job well done',maybe it's time PGE did a proper job of ensuring it still has customers in the future.

When last did you receive a rebate from Betfair for tote bets?
