Breeders' Cup bid a step closer for Golden Horn
By Jon Lees 8:29PM 5 OCT 2015
GOLDEN HORN has emerged from his Arc victory romp "incredibly well", raising the chances of a last hurrah in the US in 26 days' time as his owner dubbed him one of the greats.
Anthony Oppenheimer on Monday said Golden Horn had come out of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as if he had hardly had a race as connections consider one more start at the Breeders' Cup before heading to stud.
After seven races this season, five at Group 1 level of a campaign that began in April, the colt returned to Newmarket on Monday showing little sign the efforts have taken their toll as a result of which connections are considering a crack at the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on October 31.
Under a deal to stand Golden Horn at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket next year, Sheikh Mohammed has bought a 50 per cent stake in the colt, but until he retires from racing he remains 100 per cent owned by Oppenheimer.
'He came out of the Arc incredibly well'
"The Breeders' Cup is a possibility," said Oppenheimer, whose star turn is a general 4-5 favourite to win the Turf.
"He came out of the Arc incredibly well. I talked to the two boys with him and it looks as if he hasn't had a race much. Each time he races it is the same thing.
"We will have to wait and see. In two or three days' time we might see he has had a race and it may be common sense not to go to the States because he has raced so much this year. We are not going to make a decision for a little bit.
"We have an automatic entry from the Irish Champion Stakes so we will sit tight and see. He has arrived safely in Newmarket and looks in cracking form.
"He is an amazing horse. He is simply so strong he doesn't seem to take his race. They don't seem to affect him and nor does the travelling."
Thumbs up for Keeneland from Gosden
An appearance at the Breeders' Cup was considered unlikely early in the summer because of the tightness of US turf tracks, but trainer John Gosden has since visited the course and revised his view.
"He wanted to see how tight the corners were and he found that they are much better corners than Santa Anita," said Oppenheimer.
"He was pleasantly surprised by the width of the corners and the track. He thought it was a superb track.
"Golden Horn will have to be in tip-top form and I think that is going to be jolly difficult but we could be wrong. At the moment he looks wonderful."

Obviously connections would want to run him because they have already sated that he will not run as a 4 year old.
He looks to be meeting horses that he has already beaten and appears to take nothing out of himself.

In what is believed to be his 2nd last workout before the Classic, American Pharoah blitzed 1200m in 1:10.8 in Santa Anita y'day.
Superlatives were "Damn, that was good", "Awesome breeze".

Beholder Alert, 'Back in the Game'
Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella had good news for Beholder fans the morning of Oct. 21—the champion racemare is "back in the game."
The day after her Oct. 19 arrival at Keeneland from Southern California for a run in the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), the Spendthrift Farm runner missed training after spiking a minor temperature of 101.3 degrees, just slightly above her usual 100.3 degrees. The rise was cause for concern given her history—the winner of the 2012 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) and 2013 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) missed the Distaff last year due to a fever and lung infection.
This time, however, tests came back with encouraging results—just a slightly elevated white blood count from the stress of shipping—and after being treated with antibiotics, the 5-year-old racemare was bright and alert with her temperature back to normal again.
"She looks great this morning," Mandella said. "You know how she was yesterday; she had a temperature, she was depressed, her blood showed some stress-inflamation, a reaction from shipping, but those signs are all the same signs of pneumonia, which is a little scary.
"Consequently, once she was treated with fever medicine—and she is on antibiotics for a couple of days—once we did that, she started feeling much better."
Mandella said a final lung scan would be completed on Beholder at 9 a.m., and that she likely could tack-walk the shedrow the afternoon of Oct. 21.
"It's a possibility," he said of her going to the track Oct. 22 or 23. "Either tomorrow or the next day."
Beholder is a two-time Eclipse Award winner who this season has run through five races undefeated, including an 8 1/4-length romp against the boys in the Aug. 22 $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic (gr. I), and she carries a six-race win streak dating back to last September into the Breeders' Cup.
