Magnum Presents This Saturday's Gr3 Cape Classic

Saturday's Magnum Gr 3 Cape Classic meeting is always one of the most
looked forward to events of the Cape Summer Of Champions Season.
It not only sees racing returning to Cape Town's flagship racecourse,
Kenilworth, but also allows the country's racing purists to form early
opinions on the three-year-old crop of colts and geldings.

Great entertainment on offer as Rugby fans will be well catered for and
what better way to watch the Springboks taking on the All Blacks in the
World Cup semi-final than amidst sports fans at Kenilworth on a balmy
evening under the shadow of Table Mountain. The action will be broadcast on
many big screens. Those who pre-book in the Rugby Fan Zone will receive a
complimentary free drink and those who have pre-booked and who are on
course before 3pm stand a chance to win a bottle of Moet & Chandon as well
as a complimentary Summer of Champions hospitality package for any race day
in the season (Excluding
the J&B Met & L'Ormarins Queen's Plate) in a lucky draw. There will also be
fun entertainment for the kids.

Joey Ramsden has won the last two runnings of the Magnum Cape Classic with
the top class sorts Red Ray and Act Of War respectively and this year his
chief hope will lie with the progressive Warm White Night colt Hard Day's
Night, who has been a facile winner of his last two starts over 1200m and
1600m respectively. He also runs the hard-knocking The Stone Thrower.
The highest rated horse in the race is the Ronnie Sheehan-trained Captain
Chaos (100), who was a facile winner of last season's Gr 3 Cape Of Good
Hope Nursery. He was a touch disappointing against older horses in his
seasonal reappearance in a Graduation Plate over 1300m at Durbanville last
month, but is sure to have benefitted from the outing.

The Mike Bass yard send out three runners and their hopes lie mainly with
the consistent Ernie, although Rodney looks open to improvement and
Brilliant Crimson ran well against older horses last time.

The powerful Justin Snaith yard have two in form contestants, Baritone, who
has won his last three narrowly, and Aspara, who has won his last two
easily. Stable jockey Bernard Fayd'Herbe is duly aboard the latter, who
looks to be a horse to follow.

Greg Ennion has the joint third highest merit rated horse in the race,
Eighth Wonder. He is held by Baritone on their meeting over 1300m, but he
subsequently ran a cracker over this trip, so can't be written off. Ennion
also sends out Roman Discent, who is quite exposed and will have to improve
considerably.

KZN trainer Dennis Drier is always a thorn in the flesh of the Cape
trainers during the Cape Summer Of Champions Season and, having won this
race in 2012 with Chave De Oura, he sends out the up and coming Seymour,
who has a lot to do on official merit ratings but is unexposed and open to
a lot of improvement.

Paul Reeves sends out the 93 merit rated Forward Drive, but he was
disappointing when stepped up to 1400m last time and is well held by Eighth
Wonder on that run, so will have to improve considerably.

The Glen Puller-trained Purple Mountains is well drawn and is not far off
Baritone on the form of their last meeting over this trip.

The other highlight of the meeting is the Listed Woolavington Handicap over
2400m, a race in which Neil Bruss has a good hand with the exciting staying
types Deputy Ryder and Zante, although they are at the top of the weights
and are also the only two fillies in the race. Arezzo, Parachute Man and
Ovidio will have plenty of supporters too.

Gates open at 11H00 and entry is free.
The Somerset Room, with its spectacular views over the course, will be open
for a buffet luncheon at R250 per person.

Actually took a fancy to this horse on the way down to the start but was too busy trying not to miss the rugby and failed to back it. Don't think it was by any means a one off . Think will be decent horse.
