Jockeys can become Trainers now.........

Well not here in S.A. but dual licences are given the go ahead in Victoria Oz.
Jockeys will be able to train horses next season after a review of Racing Victoria's jockey licencing policy.
The move to allow jockeys to train horses will be subject to integrity-based conditions but is aimed at giving riders a chance for a smooth transition should they wish to join the training ranks from August 1 next year.
It is not known how many jockeys will take up the option to train a stable but the move is another step in a process that began when riders were given the option to start breaking in and pre-training horses last year.
Racing Victoria has set a minimum ride criteria for a jockey to retain their licences. Flat jockeys are required to ride in 24 races a year while an apprentice needs to have 12 mounts, as do 'A Class' jumps riders.
Dual licence holders will not be able to ride in a race in which they have a runner without the specific approval of the stewards but may get permission ride their own horse in the event of a shortage of jockeys.
Dual licence holder will not be able to run multiple horses from their stable in a race.
Stewards or Racing Victoria has the power to order the suspension of a jockey for a serious breach of the rules carried out in their capacity as a trainer while any substantial penaltyearned as a rider could also be applied to their trainer's licence.
The new policy will also increase the responsibility of Racing Victoria's Rider Skills Panel, who will take over the assessment of riding licence applicants from stewards while continuing to assess the performance of existing jockeys.
"In the interests of integrity, dual licence holders who have a horse engaged in a race will not be allowed to ride any other horse in the race without specific approval of the Stewards, nor will they be able to accept with multiple horses trained by them in any one race,” Racing Victoria's general manager of integrity Dayle Brown said in a statement.
"The safety of our participants is also a critical concern and the expanded requirements for licencing of Victorian jockeys is being brought in to ensure jockeys have the inherent requirements to ride in races.
"Having the Rider Skills Panel play a more active role in assessing applicants for a rider's licence will also help to ensure that appropriate safety and integrity standards are met.”

At least one big name jockey who has integrity issues comes to mind. Should ever he take out a trainers license we should steer clear, especially if he has the favourite.

Good idea. Percy, the squaregaiters have been doing it forever.....there's no need to get excited about training/riding,each runner as always will be judged. Jimk,no need to confuse yourself.....when the trainer throws a leg over he/she automatically becomes the jockey, therefore no bets. Very simple stuff. The interesting thing is the delicate conversation between owner and trainer to sack the jockey.

c'mon Percival, be realistic, trainer have been giving their horses runs as long as racing has been going and the stewards know this but now with the amount of trials , it can be done that way. A question that should be asked if jockeys are to be issued with a trainers license, does that then give them a right to bet on their horse, which trainers are free to do now.

The idea has merit but far too many restrictions basically voids any incentive for a dual licensee to expand their stable. Stewards should be more competent and be able to tell if ones out for the run and the penalty should be severe enough so as to act as a deterrent.

Won't be a big surprise if Jeff LLoyd joins the jockey/trainer ranks.
