What about the Merit ratings of the field? it`s either a brilliant crop of horses or the handicapper needs to give his head a wobble..

Never seen a max field with every runner rated in the 100`s ?

I'm sure he'll get in - a few doubtful runners imo including French Navy, Same Jurisdiction, Smart Call, Bouclette Top, Master Sabina etc - also not sure if Legislate will stay in (think they are going to go all out with him for the QP) - it could end up a very ordinary MET field bar the top one or two

Could the merit rating Fundi's (Frodo, Mr H, Bayern or if I have forgotten someone) pls take a moment of their time to explain something to me...

How has Legal Eagle got a higher MR than Futura?

Legal Eagle earned the 120 when winning the Jubilee Handicap - giving Judicial (winner next start and 4th in the Summer Cup) 3.5 kg's and a 4.3 length beating - did not reproduce in the July but had his excuses imo.

What is strange is that Futura has been dropped a point from the July  and the Met not being a handicap means that LE will now meet F on much worse terms than in the July - really this MET is shaping up to be a one horse race imo

The big difference the last year or two is that fewer of our top 3yos exported to Dubai, so we have more proper Gr1 4 and 5 year olds still competing in SA.

I think most of the top contenders will stand their ground. If legislate is in a good place and runs well in the queens plate , he will beat Futura.Again.

Legislate is a fantastic miler but even though a July winner does not seem as brilliant over 2000 and further imo Futura on paper does look hard to beat

Cape Derby , July , daily news...not bad for a horse better over a mile.
Just saying ...if he is in good form he is as good a bet as Futura in my opinion. Can't rule out others either but I think the LQP will tell us quite a bit with the strong field and likely give an idea of what we can expect from a pace point of view.

Yep. Legislate hasn't reproduced that form of his amazing 3yo season since the July or perhaps the Green Point. Yes he's won races but not in his old dazzling fashion. If he comes out of the QP well and we see the old Legislate back, then he'll easily get the 2000m and he will win as I still feel he is the best horse in the country, just that his brilliant 3yo campaign took alot out of him.
