STATE OF THE UNION was disqualified from second place in Lingfield’s concluding handicap on Monday after his rider Kieren Fox weighed in 3lb light in circumstances that could not be explained.
Fox said: “The rules need changing. It was there when I weighed out and handed the saddle over. It’s not there now and I don’t know where it is, but how can it possibly be my fault? What am I supposed to have done with it?”
Carter the trainer said: “It’s never happened before. I saddled him in the stable yard, which is where I saddle all of mine, and it must have come off in the race, although Kieren never felt it go.”
