Will the Springboks be banned from Internationals?
9 years 5 months ago
I am hearing from pretty good sources that England, Australia and New Zealand have spoken to the IRB(or the new name) and said that the Springboks were banned in the apartheid era because of political interference in team selection and as a rule in the IRB constitution they should be banned again because of the political interference in the team selection by the ANC government and some affiliates. Anyone else heard this?

heres some facts
Rugby union and the apartheid regime had a complex relationship. From 1948 to 1994, international rugby relations with the country, and also the non-integrated nature of rugby within South Africa drew frequent controversy. South Africa remained a member of the International Rugby Board (IRB) throughout the apartheid era.
Halt All Racist Tours was established in New Zealand in 1969 to oppose continued tours to and from South Africa. Though contacts were restricted after the Gleneagles Agreement in 1977, there were controversial tours in 1980 by the British Lions and by France, in 1981 by Ireland, and in 1984 by England. South Africa toured New Zealand in 1981. South Africa were excluded from the first two Rugby World Cups, in 1987 and 1991. Racially selected New Zealand sports teams toured South Africa until the 1970 All Blacks rugby tour allowed Māori to go under the status of 'honorary whites'.
No other issue, political or otherwise has divided the rugby community so much, at least not since the great schism with rugby league over professionalism. While many rugby fans and commentators would try and body swerve politics, at least politics of a certain kind, the apartheid issue brought it right into the heart of the game, in a very direct, and often physical way. The issue particularly came to the fore in the seventies and eighties. Unlike the split in the rugby world though, the apartheid issue attracted considerable interest from outside the sporting world.
The issue affected not only black South Africans, but also indigenous New Zealanders and to a lesser extent indigenous Australians. Many major rugby union international sides had few non-white players, but theoretically, a side such as Fiji would be frowned upon.

It will be interesting. The person chatting last night was at most of the WC games and is very good friends with a number of the staff in the Springbok coaching team. Apparently those teams only want to play against our best be they black, white, brown, green as long as it is our best team(All South Africans I have spoken to have the same feeling.) Only the best is good enough at that level. Cricket and all other sports as well at international level.

I have always believed that you are born with certain talents and without it no amount of practice and exposure will improve your potential in meaningful ways.
Talented young players from disadvantaged and all other communities should be given early access to top training facilities and coaching so that they can develop to their full potential. This should be done at junior level and lower level senior competition as truly talented players will make their way to the top on merit and would not be in need of further support.
You are either good enough or you are not and it has very little to do in this day and age with anything but raw talent and hard work. Given the limited number of places available for selection causes many hard luck stories for players of all colour but consistent performance and true talent will always come to the fore.
Often injuries, which are many at the top level, provides unexpected opportunities which fringe players have to grab with everything they have to set themselves up for longer term and more regular selection.
There is no place in society for teams to be represented by anything but the best when it comes to professional sporting codes and international competition.
At international level even your best side is often not good enough which is why teams cannot carry passengers or good players short of greatness.
The jersey should always be worn with pride and admired by the nation which will be easiest to do when a country is represented by it's very best, regardless of colour.
Political interference only causes division between communities and stands in the way of uniting a nation behind national teams.

Like most things the solution will be a financial one.
Let sponsors withdraw, let spectators stop buying tickets. Watching a "representative" team get rodgered is not something people should be paying for. Test tickets start at 400 for the cheap seats. Why would anyone want to pay top dollar to watch the shit they talking about.
We need to acknowledge the sins of the past and put it behind us. The solution is not to put a weakened team at any level ( including school u13f ) the solution is ensuring that every child regardless of colour is given the equal opportunity and that the cream should rise to the top. We are now 22 years into ANC corruption, excuse me, rule and apartheid still gets blamed for everything. Im sick of it.
Has anyone ever wondered why there have been zero Springboks and only a handful of provincial players ( I can not think of one to be honest but think KZN may have had one or two in their junior ranks over the years ) of INDIAN descent? The answer may lie in the answering of that question.

Re: Will the Springboks be banned from Internationals?
9 years 5 months agoyes lets apply the same policy in racing in gold circle country where all year round horses trainers and owners from out of province are given the same treatment as locally based players and we attract the best horses possible to race all year round ..this will please the racing fans no end just like picking teams on merit only willCraig Eudey wrote: It will be interesting.
