@Naresh...from memory.... and I may get shot down... I reckon Yataghan had Bertie Hayden in the saddle there... and for the Sledgehammer one... I get confusing stuff in my kop {reaches for another double) Fred Rickaby springs to mind ... but also Michael Roberts.... aishhh {downs a quick shot.... thinks 'fark this'} {meanders off to find a SYT}

Garrick wrote: Slow down, boys! All this debate about the favourites. The Met has a long history of being won by lesser fancied runners so beware horses which are displaying suspect form in their prep races.

A bookmaker once advised me to pass on punting in big races altogether for the following reasons;

Favourites average about 5/2 in major races. Hardly a gift when you consider that a Grade 1 is one of the few occasions where you are taking on a field which is 100% alive with all runners genuinely out to try and win. You can get the same price most weeks in a maiden plate where only a handful of runners are likely to bother the fancied runner/s for a number of reasons; ranging from the horse actually being useless to inexperience etc. Better proposition!

The Met became a conditions race in 1973 although the selfsame conditions have been tampered with in recent years. You might also like to take out the superstar multiple winners from that period such as Politician & Pocket Power. But for evaluation purposes I list hereunder the real 'roughie' results since that date:

1973 - Gold Flame
1981 - Queen's Elect
1985 - Charles Fortune
1989 - Fearless Streaker
1994 - Pas De Quoi
1998 - Imperious Sue
2001 - Bunter Barlow
2005 - Alastor
2010 - River Jetez
2011 - Past Master
2013 - Martial Eagle

To the best of my memory all of the above, with the possible exception of Past Master (who delivered a poor Queens Plate before winning the Met), started at odds of 10/1 or longer. So statistically you have a 1 in 4 chance of being rolled by a roughie if you back the favourite in this race.

Makes a mockery of the odds on offer about Futura & Legal Eagle right now.

The 2002 winner Polo Classic is one of my "favorite"J&B Met winners who won at odds of around 12/1. The emotion of Barend Vorster after the race was out of this world. Interestingly Polo Classic won the London News Stakes before that, London News as we all know also won the Met.

The oldest video I could find of Garrick's roughie winners.

Charles Fortune - 1985

Excellent point Garrick, have to agree with the upset potential.
prices at the moment seem are crazy at the moment for Futura and Legal Eagle,
these two are obviously something special but on the day anything can happen!

Deo Juvente if cracking a decent draw and can win but has proven to run well even when drawn in the bush so a decent antipost EW bet imo. Cant agree with the short prices on the favs. So @ 14/1 worth a crack. Imo he is a gr1 winner without a penalty as his summer cup run was top top draw and shouldve won.

I don't think there is much value about anything at the moment - for me Legal Eagle will win with Futura his only danger; Smart Call a little bit of an 'unknown' against the males and if French Navy does stand his ground (and why not?) he could be the dark horse - I'd be really surprised if anything else wins .....

Looking at the records Sunshine Man was another rank outsider to win the Met in 1980.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it on here but the weight conditions of the met changed dramatically after pocket power won his first met so what happened prior to that year should be thrown out the window when looking at stats...horses like la fabulous and divine master were well placed by their trainers to win the met and came in with superb galloping weights...the met as a betting race especially the ante post market creates very little interest because of the conditions of the race unlike the july which is a handicap and there is always value to be had in the lead up to the announcement of the final field

Naresh, thanks for posting, always nice to see the old races. My old man had Festive Season running in that race. (3rd) The previous year she ran second to Politician. Fantastic memories and times that cemented my love for racing and the animal as a youngster.

I have stopped playing the lotto (will save me at least £18 a week) I am going to take that money and save for a trip to the Rugby 7s in December and the Queens Plate plus the New Years Test at Newlands.
