The Daily News 2000 which will be run at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday, 7 June 2008, drew a crack entry of 24 when nominations closed today (Wednesday) and importantly, the name Kings Gambit was among them.

Trainer Lance Wiid has earmarked an overseas campaign for the sensational winner of both the SA Classic and the SA Derby and the Daily News 2000 may well be the last we see of Kings Gambit in this country.

However, the gelding drew badly at 22, which will give Wiid food for thought.

After two years at 2200m, the Daily News distance has been reduced by 200m back to its original distance of 2000 and the race is a major pointer to the outcome of the Vodacom Durban July.

Among the Daily News nominations is Dingaans winner Lion’s Blood, who was recently sold out of the Tyrone Zackey yard and moved to Herman Brown at Summerveld with Dubai in mind. Justin Snaith has nominated his crack galloper Russian Sage who was a smart winner of the Investec Cape Derby and finished second in both the Bloodstock South Africa Cape Guineas behind Pointing North and the KZN Guineas where he was a fast-finishing second behind subsequent Drill Hall Stakes winner Imbongi.

Both Lion’s Blood and Russian Sage drew well at 4 and 2 respectively.

Trainer Brett Crawford will have been disappointed with draw 24 for his promising colt Danish Silver as the son of Silvano has come on nicely since being rested and has won his last three starts. However, Crawford will have been well pleased with draw 6 for his Eastern Province Derby winner, Just Like Al.

Charles Laird has Causation and Smart Banker entered while Art Of War, Galant Gagnant and Rudra, due to line up in the Astrapak 1900 on Friday night, currently represent the Mike de Kock yard.

Other notable entries are Investec Cape Derby second Tan Can from the Dean Kannemeyer yard and Sorba El Greigo who will do duty for trainer Glen Kotzen in the Astrapak 1900 at Greyville Racecourse on Friday night.
