The Derby, Million Dollar and Majorca were basically a purists race-day with racing being the primary attraction - and the net effect for a free race-day was POOR public attendance except in the sponsors tents. Now a meeting that you paid to attend is up on last year not because of the Racing(Derby and Majorca dropped from event) but because of the side shows. As a purist this hurts but as a realist I can see that without the party Racing is doomed as there is ZERO interest in punting horses among the under 30's. Who is to blame for that is another story.
Contrary to popular belief,I can assure you that many under 30's like nothing more than to have a bet.
Each and every year I get calls on Met day from non-racing people asking me what they can have a bet on.These may not be massive punters, but they'll spend a couple of hundred.
The biggest problem for all these people is that racing is complicated.Bets are confusing and so a call to someone who understands the game and can explain it to them enables them to go to the course and have a bet without looking like a fool. Most of the people at my local pub know I am involved in racing, and I had many enquiries as to what they could back on Met day. This was not just on the Met itself.
Until P fully realizes this and implements racing education the game will continue to battle to attract young customers. It's only the really determined customer who will try and educate themselves.
I've played live poker with many under 30's,and they are certainly not averse to having a bet,but these clearly intelligent people have absolutely no interest in racing as the barriers to entry just appear too daunting from the outset.

you can moan, bitch, cough, spit, jump all you like even if you are 2000% correct about this or anything else in racing and it will make no difference, its the Phumelela and co way or the hi-way, ask me i know and i qualify to speak, 13 years or 156 month ends of keeping Formgrids going to aid the punter, for the betterment of racing, Formgrids undoubtedly increases turnover yet we get almost zero assistance and co-operation from the great ones who market and guide the game,
