Thanks for the post , I was at both match race's. The first one in Joburg I was working for either Harry Symons or Moosa Theba and I scurried off to put my day's wages on ....Brainteaser....as I was caught up in the Azzie gobshite , they were betting roughly 7/10 Brainteaser and 11/10 Divine Act. As seen it was never a race.
Sadly I think Charles van Booma lost an eye that ended his career due to being kicked by a horse in the parade ring ?
The second match race was sponsored by Winning Form at Greyville. I helped Owen Heffer and Dermot O'Connell place posters all over the race course. Señor Santa and Northern Princess over the mile. Sadly I backed the gelding who went to the front despite question marks over whether he would stay. Michael Roberts rode a peach of a race, tracked Señor Santa till the 400m pulled out from behind and it was all over. Once again I think the betting was similar with SS the favourite.

You and me both ..............I was at Turf the day Divine Act won the maiden ..............I had a mate connected with the stable and had been waiting for weeks..........then had to wait for the 10th ..................only good news ,everything I backed on the day was in the form of a double into DA.
Was also at Germiston and pure loyalty made me stay with DA (Azzie can be very convincing)
I was also on course at Greyville for the Double Eagle/Jolly Drummer match race .........................I backed the wrong one there!
The hype and debates leading up to these races were amazing!

Since this talk of match races.....
If you had to pick two horses today who could participate in a match race, two who would not only be evenly matched over a particular distance but two who would draw the crowds and the attention of the racing fraternity as it had in the days of yore.....
Two horses and the distance you like them to run over.....
GO!

Is there anybody who might remember whether a match race between Sentinel and Harry Hotspur took place at Milnerton ?
I speak under correction and would appreciate any info forthcoming.

You will see in the footage that the filly set the pace , not the gelding. Senor Santa was not a proven miler so Howes sat a few lengths behind Roberts but couldn't reel her in.
Just to put the record straight. :silly:

I cant remember any match race, only the following..
It wasn’t his swansong victory, but the 1975 Jack Stubbs Memorial over 1000m at Milnerton was a cherry atop a fabulous career. On a perfect Cape summer day, seven-year-old Sentinel whipped talented speedster Harry Hotspur, with two other precocious youngsters way back in third and fourth – Archangel and Yataghan. The “Thoroughbred News’’ picture of this finish was captioned, “The result that says it all’’.
THEY dubbed him “The Iron Horse’’ because he was the toughest and most enduring of characters.
The statistics tell the story of resilience, bravery and versatility. From 56 starts, he recorded 29 wins – with 12 Grade 1s – and 21 places.
Racing from two to seven years of age between 1971 and 1975, he travelled throughout the country and won at eight different racecourses from 1000m to 1600m. There has been no other South African horse with a record like that at the top level.

Its why In Full Flight had to be one of the best ever...................He never lost to Sentinel or Elevation .............(in fact he beat them both by over 5 lgths in the Bull Brand international)They both became champions after his death. That is the relativity that is very special.
(The closest was when Sentinel and IFF dead heated in the Cape Guineas.)
Also versatile ..............won the July ,1 month after winning the Concorde stakes over 1000m
