growing up the kings cup was the first feature race of the natal winter season and horses that would be july nominations would be running in it ..sadly the winter season has lost plenty of its shine in fact its laughable they now have called it the south afican champions season  also I see the colts and fillies guineas are to be run on a Friday I presume its Friday night as it was always run on the first Saturday in may ..sometimes I get the feeling changes are made for the sake of it ...and yes the kings cup has always been on grass ...

I remember back in the 90s Modern Day won this race. Being in school in the 90s I grew up knowing that the Concorde Stakes was the first feature of the season which was run on that Wednesday before the Drill Hall Stakes on Saturday so I knew by then the Winter Season was upon us.That said I also remember the Rupert Ellis Brown being run in April.

Believe it or not the Queen, yes the Queen of England, around 1995 I think made an appearance at Greyville what was suppose to be running of the Kings Cup but the race got postponed because of wet weather. Nevertheless she still made it to Greyville.

The Good said on Winning Ways last night something like that the cup is too stunning to be let out to the public. The Kings Cup that is presented is not the original. He didnt say where the original cup is homed. (Cant find a pic on google).

Found this on Sporting Post

Fit For A King

The ability to race handy often makes all the difference between winning and losing, especially on a sharp course like Greyville.

Jean Heming-trained Wengener Hof is inevitably at or near the front throughout his races, and he kept on gamely to defeat former Cape Derby winner Comareen in the delayed King’s Cup over 2100m at Greyville on Monday, 27 March (the race is normally a 1600m event nowadays, but was returned to the distance over which it was run at the time of the last Royal visit in 1947). Comareen looked a worthy favourite after a good effort behind Unaware in a slow run 1600m event at Clairwood two weeks earlier, but the concession of 5.5 kgs to Wengener Hof proved just too much for the Liloy gelding.

The early pace was strong, with Milkman setting it from Not Negotiable, Wengener Hof and Reach For The Star, while Comareen waited a good 15 lengths off the leader. The front pair had had enough turning for home and Wengener Hof quickly took command. Comareen came forward at the subway and looked to be going much the better, but the weight difference told in the end. He just couldn’t get to grips with a gutsy Wengener Hof, who held on to win by nearly a length. Instant Power ran on to finish third and so make it a one-three result for Gauteng trained visitors.
