mvp1 wrote: The charity turf challenge amongst other things is meant for a chunk of the proceeds to go towards the horse care unit but by my calculations seem like they are running this years comp at a nett loss. With the winner getting 100k and the stand alone july winner getting 20k thats already 120k and they only recieved about a 100k or from entries.

There is also sponsors, GC,Betting World etc

Today will be a defining day in the competition and for the July.
It's about time that that the Daily News first 3 run well in the VDJ again.
It's time that punters make something again on the day with favourites arriving....keeps the interest in the game alive.

I hqve an entry which had bith Real Princess and Talktothestars in it. Was coming off a low base so now only on 97 points, but looks decent going forward.
I really hope COA is alright. When. CLOTH OF CLOUD got scratched I decided to brass her for Saturday due to virus scare

Pity Talktothestars not lining up for Mercury sprint.
Would have been more points in the bag :)

JJ The Jet Plane and Shea Shea are names synonymous with success against the best sprinters in the world. Prior to embarking on an international campaign, both had won the Gr.1 Tsogo Sun Sprint carrying top weight or very close to it, so owner/trainer Coenie De Beer has every reason to believe that an international career beckons for his outstanding bargain buy, Talktothestars (Overlord). The Tsogo Sun Sprint carried the first of the four bonus points on offer, so Talktothestars took home the maximum 25 points for his efforts. Three year old, African Ruler earned 14 points for his gallant second place ahead of Exelero who was not part of the competition.

The City Of Pietermaritzburg Gr.1 SA Fillies Sprint was a turn up for the competition, as the heavily supported Carry On Alice found all sorts of trouble in running and finished unplaced. The spoils were left to Real Princess who showed her liking for the Scottsville straight course, quickening at the right time to take home 20 points for her supporters. Evergreen Fly By Night came back to her best for second and the improving 3yr old filly, Joan Ranger, managed 3rd place.

The Leader Board changed significantly and “Nandha Naidoo 6” surged to the lead with a nice cushion of 6 points ahead of stable companion, “Nandha Naidoo 5” who shares second spot with “Mark” on 141 points. With big points on offer this weekend, the Leader Board is again sure to take on a new look come Sunday night.

This year's competition is going to go down to the wire...seems like just a few points covering top 100 entries and the likes of Abashiri and legal Eagle not included in the current top entries.Guess everyone still in the running... :cheer: exciting times ahead

Mac De Lago emerged as a major point scorer following his success in the second of the competition bonus races, the Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, taking home the maximum 25 points. Not without support in the betting market, Mac De Lago lived up to trainer Weiho Marwing’s belief that he had a big race win in him and he heads to the Vodacom Durban July as a serious contender. Losing on objection was Trip To Heaven who earned 14 points and French Navy ran a fantastic trial for the July in third place which earned him 10 points. Consolation awaits Trip To Heaven who is carded to race in the Gr.2 Post Merchants should trainer Sean Tarry allow him to take his chance on Friday night.

Brett Crawford’s improving Dynasty filly, Alexis, got up close home to deny Silver Mountain in the Gr.2 Tibouchina Stakes earning 19 points which included the bonus 5 points for winners returning more than R15 on the Tote. Silver Mountain, one of the competition favourites, got on the leader board with 9 points and third placed Sensible Lover earned 6 points.

The last of the supporting features saw another long shot winner in the form of Exit Here who earned 14 points for his followers in the Gr.3 Cup Trial. Dynamic earned points again taking his total to 11 and Saratoga Dancer earned his followers 3 points after another successful objection which relegated The Conglomerate to 4th place.

The final July “Trial” took placed on Sunday at Turffontein and the Gr.3 Jubilee Handicap went to the improving 3yr old, Liege, who took home 9 points. With runner-up Rainy Day Blues not in the competition, the third place went to Romany Prince who earned 3 points.

The top end of the Leader Board was largely unchanged with “Nandha Naidoo 6” advancing to 156 points, still 6 points ahead of stable companion, “Nandha Naidoo 5” who shares second spot with “Mark” on 150 points. “Rennie Reddy 1” lies in fourth place on 149 points having included French Navy in this entry.
