For the first time in the history of the competition, there were multiple joint winners of the Stand Alone prize for the most points earned on Vodacom Durban July day!

I had Inara...conglomerate and Marineresco in different entries and in entries that had the lowest points so no help really...

just missed it had Conglomerete Inara Mac De lago in one entry along with Silver Mountain who failed

2016 CHARITY TURF CHALLENGE sponsored by Gold Circle

In what appears to be a season of upsets, The Conglomerate scored the maximum points on offer by winning the Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July, one of the four bonus races in the competition, at long odds. His 30 point haul elevated him to 3rd place on the log, just 5 points behind new leader, Mac De Lago, after the latter’s sterling 3rd placed effort on Saturday. Cape Town star three year old, Marinaresco, more than justified the decision to bypass the Winter Derby in favour of a tilt at the July with a tremendous late run to secure second spot and 14 points for his followers.



The top class Inara rewarded her supporters with a stylish win in the Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes, earning 20 points for the Gr.1 victory. Olma proved her ability in Gr.1 company with a top effort from a wide draw and took home 14 points, ahead of pacesetter, Bichette, in third.



Last year’s July runner-up, Punta Arenas’ class showed when putting the Gr.3 Delta Airlines 2200 to bed in a matter of strides to take home 9 points for his followers. The evergreen son of Silvano has some interesting options available to him on Gold Cup Day. Talented NZ bred, The Centenary, finished strongly for 2nd place and she will be an interesting contender in the Gr.2 Gold Cup if showing up on the day. Alghadeer earned 3 points for his 3rd place as did Kingston Mines, the only point scorer in the Gr.3 Gold Vase, which was dominated by the Mike de Kock runners. Long shot winners took the last two races on the card, Redcarpet Captain, winning the TabGold Sprint at R25.30 on the Tote, thus earning him 6 points and Sail South, smashed his opponents in the Listed Daisy Business Solutions at R26.80 and earned 7 points for his victory.



As expected, July Day saw a big change at the top of the leader board. Blueski Palooski 1, emerged in top position with 175 points thanks to The Conglomerate and Mac De Lago netting him 40 points. 3 points behind is Shadley 50 who relied on Marinaresco and Mac de Lago to keep his momentum going. ClintonG 2 and William 4 are on 169 and 168 points respectively and with the countdown to Elan Group Gold Cup Day starting, every point earned from now will count.

Talktothestars’ wide barrier, the non-appearance of Carry On Alice and the return to form of Red Ray certainly altered the fate of many competition entrants after the running of the hugely important Gr.1 Mercury Sprint. With the outsider, Night Trip, enjoying the shorter distance when finishing runner-up, it was left to Real Princess to keep her followers in the hunt for CTC glory by earning 10 points for her third place.

One of the main beneficiaries of Real Princess’ efforts was Clinton G 2, who went to the top of the leader board with 179 points, 4 clear of last week’s leader, Blueski Palooski 1. Spare a thought for Shadley 50 whose entry included Gulf Storm, only just missing 3rd place and the 10 points that went with it.

So, the final countdown to Elan Property Group Gold Cup Day has begun in earnest. The top entries are listed below, with 9th placed entry, The Winner’s Box, some 22 points adrift of Clinton G 2, but potentially has Balance Sheet and Mac De Lago batting for him. There is a total of 111 points on offer on the final day, so it is very possible that the winning entry will come from some way off the pace, all told an exciting finish to this year’s competition.
