Well done to the Spies team. Why must the horse stand in his box if it is fit enough to run?

I remember the late Buddy Maroun ran his horses this way and it was a hotly contested subject but I agree if the horse takes the run well and is ready it should run that's why we pay trainers. Well done to you Corne.

What abt the horse's well being????? Sure,he keeps winning And comes out 'well' but surely it will have some long term effects on the poor horse!!! Well done se gat!!!!! Its overkill, doesn't matter if he wins or runs stone last.

A bit harsh don't you think? Both the trainer and horse deserve credit, Velvet Verona is very well and loves he's racing, Corne has been in the arena long enough to understand what he's horses are capable of, a trait of a great trainer. I think you should reserve your comment after you can claim a better result after a 1 year period, never mind a week.

During this period all he would have done is got out his box more than usual and allowed to run around, he wont have done any work
A hell of a lot better than being tied up in his box for 23 hours a day or retired to let some fat biatch to abandon him in a stable for 6 days, visit on a sunday give him a cuddle and stick on SM saying look how better he looks since we [strike]abandoned[/strike] rescued him from racing..

Fine line though.
A competitive run exerts lots of stress on a horse no just externally but also internally. Some horses could deal with it better than others so Corne just has to hope his horsemanship knows he is one who can deal with it.
Not like he is going for little canters when he leaves his box to go for the run.

I know I'll catch flack too but I do think Spies runs his horses too often. Yes we get the wonder story like Velvet Verona once in a blue moon but if running your horses every couple days was the best strategy then why isn't everyone around the world doing it? I mean he has a juvenile in the 1st today running for the 3rd time in 5 days, I don't care if it comes out to win (which is highly unlikely but is irrelevant) but there is no way that it can be good for a 2 year old horse to run this frequently. You can be sure this horse probably won't even make its 3 year old campaign and it'll be off to the glue factory within the year once its been milked for a couple thousand in stakes. Spies would honestly be the last trainer I'd ever send a horse to because if you strike it lucky and have a potential champion the thing would've been run 50 times by the time it turns 5 and the horse would be buggered and picking up cheques in Flamingo Park (case and point Sarve).

I have heard many trainers say when they are contemplating quick re runs " will let the horse tell me "
Meaning they will wait to see how they take the race, vet check blah blah
One thing i do notice is this doesnt happen with the good ones, only the strugglers or the ones allowed to become strugglers

Hi again,
A brilliant feat yes (by the horse), .....but!!!
Spies is making it very difficult for trainers with horses with "issues" and asshole owners, who do not understand (horses, ...period!) that not every horse can take a hammering!
Thorougbred racing is already under the spot light by the activist " bunny huggers", and on the controversial topic of thoroughbreds being backed before they are 2yrs old, and then raced before their bones are fully formed, 2yr olds especially should not be subjected to this method of racing. That being said.......
25/3/16 Jockey C Zackey reported REFRAIN was not striding out freely in the running. The Course Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine -
REFRAIN not striding out behind.
.........3 days later it wins by 2.75 lengths?
The wonder horse Velvet Verona's canter down yesterday can only be described as "concerning"! Waiting for the relevant Stipes Report.....
There are pro's and con's to all trainers training/racing ethics, but this practice (of the Spies yard) I doubt will ever receive general approval! Punters should be the first naysayers! I will not be surprised to hear that this method of racing is eventually investigated by animal welfare authorities!
Myself, ......I don't know where I stand yet?!
Take care.
P.S. Have you ever stood and had a good, hard, objective look at the horses as they leave the parade ring after a race?
