Champions Day brings the Intercontinental Village
9 years 1 month agoCan Abashiri be the next Louis the King?
Champions Day on Saturday 30 April at Turffontein will host the third leg of the SA Triple Crown, the Grade 1 Derby, the race that will decide whether Abashiri can join an elite group of only two horseracing heroes to win all three legs of the Triple Crown, last achieved by the phenomenal Louis the King in 2014 and before that by Horse Chestnut in 1999.
Champions Day will also host the popular Intercontinental Village, which will be showcasing culture, tradition, community and foods from around the globe, making for a great family fun day out.
South African horseracing fans will be glued to their screens and a bumper crowd is expected at Turffontein on 30 April to witness what will be an exhilarating end to the Triple Crown. Furthermore, Champions Day also features the R4 million Champions Challenge, currently the richest race in the country.
Join in on Saturday 30 April as Turffontein becomes a ‘mecca of multiculturalism’ with colourful crafts, costumes, live on-stage entertainment as well as delicious international cuisine!
Champions Day is bound to be one of the most exciting race days this season as Abashiri will give his everything to win the Triple Crown, and no one will be more excited than owners and true horse lovers Adriaan and Rika van Vuuren, who stand a chance of earning a R 2 million bonus should Abashiri achieve this feat.
When asked what trainer Mike Azzie thinks of Abashiri’s odds at Champions Day, he just says “I'll let Abashiri do the talking”.
The interest in Abashiri, a name which means fearless beauty, is so great that he now has his own Twitter following. Follow Abashiri @Abashiri_horse to monitor his progress and the build up to Champions Day. In a tribute to Abashiri and the excitement mounting for Champions Day, the theme and dress code for 30 April will be black and orange, Abashiri’s racing colours.
Gates on Saturday 30 April open at 11 and entrance is free. For more information or bookings for Champions Day on 30 April, please call 011 681 1702 or at www.itsarush.co.za
