No entries from the top regional stables Snaith, Kannemeyer, Ramsden, Drier or Howells for the biggest purse on the SA Racing calendar.

Mind boggling

Six horses have been added to the list of entries for the R4-million Premier’s Champions Challenge (Grade 1) over 2000m at Turffontein on Champions Day Saturday 30 April.

The name of the race has also been changed from the President’s Champions Challenge to reflect the close relationship Phumelela is developing with the office of the Premier of Gauteng.

Additional entries comprise Captain America, who remained in Johannesburg after finishing second to Legal Eagle in the R1-million HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m recently, Grade 1 winner Afrikaburn, Diesel Jet, who has failed to feature in his four races at this level, last year’s SA Oaks winner Pine Princess, Trading Profit and three-year-old Brazuca, runner-up in four Grade 1 races to date.

Flying The Flag has been scratched.

Abashiri, the highest-rated three-year-old in the country, is one of 10 nominations for the R2-million SA Derby (Grade 1) over 2450m at Turffontein on Champions Day on Saturday 30 April.

The race forms the third and final leg of the SA Triple Crown and Abashiri is bang on target to follow in the footsteps of past Triple Crown winners Horse Chestnut and Louis The King after impressive victories in the first two legs - the Betting World Gauteng Guineas and the SA Classic.

Racegoers at Champions Day are being urged to wear black and orange in support of Abashiri, who races in the black and orange silks of owners Adriaan and Rika van Vuuren.

Mike Azzie-trained Abashiri is now rated 117 - nine points more than trainer Sean Tarry’s charge Samurai Blade, the second top-rated entry.

Samurai Blade finished a pleasing third behind Abashiri in the 1800m SA Classic at Turffontein this month and Tarry believes his charge will be better suited to the longer distance of the Derby.

On 95, the next best-weighted horse will be Jubilee Line from the Mike de Kock stable. This one-time winner was beaten by Bankable Teddy in the Derby Trial last time out, but that run came after a layoff of nearly four months and he has scope for improvement.

Entries for the R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks (Grade 2) over 2450m on the same day include Juxtapose, who scored a shock win from Negroamaro in the 1800m SA Fillies Classic.

The nine feature races on Champions Day also include the country’s premier 1000m race, the R1-million World Sports Betting Computaform Sprint.

Carry On Alice, one of the best sprinting fillies in the country, is one of 22 horses entered for the weight-for-age contest, which will be one of the highlights of the day.

Tarry-trained Carry On Alice finished second to Alboran Sea in this race last year before winning the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint and later finishing second to Captain Of All in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint.

Sent down to Cape Town for the Cape Flying Championship early this year, she finished a close third behind Gulf Storm and Brutal Force.

She is rated four points or four lengths inferior over this distance to another entry, Louis Goosen-trained Trip Tease, but this five-year-old gelding finished behind Carry On Alice in both the Computaform Sprint last year and the more recent Cape Flying Championship.

The second top-rated male on the list of entries is Coenie de Beer-trained Talktothestars. He was not far behind Carry On Alice in the Cape Flying Championship and went on to run a great trial for this race in winning the Senor Santa Handicap last month.

Coastal entries include Dennis Drier-trained Guiness, a lightly raced winner of the 2014 Gold Medallion, and Port Elizabeth-based Copper Parade, winner of this race two years ago.

Supplementary entries for the Derby and Computaform Sprint close on Monday 18 April and final fields will be announced on Wednesday 20 April. Supplementary entries for the Oaks are on 22 April.

Four fillies have been entered for the R1-million SA Nursery (Grade 1) over 1160m at Turffontein on Champions Day on Saturday 30 April - Cloth Of Cloud, Exquisite Touch, Seattle Singer and Cyber Magic.

All four are also entered in the R400,000 SA Fillies Nursery (Grade 2) on the same day.

Ruling champion trainer Sean Tarry rates Cloth Of Cloud very highly and she has won both her starts to date, the last in the Pretty Polly Stakes over 1100m.

The handicappers have not officially rated the two-year-old crop yet, but on provisional ratings she is the second-highest rated runner on the list of entries behind Mike de Kock-trained colt Janoobi.

He has been given a rating of 96 following his win in the Protea Stakes over 1100m, with Cloth Of Cloud two points, or 1kg inferior.

Tarry has entered another filly in the form of Exquisite Touch, who has also shown promise in winning both her starts to date, including the Ruffian Stakes over 1000m.

Port Elizabeth trainer Yvette Bremner has entered Pacific Spirit, runner-up on debut in the Summer Juvenile Stakes on J&B Met Day and winner of both his starts since.
