A Mixed Bag of Sporting Goodies

This weekend is one of excellent sporting variety. There is really so much to bet on!
Let’s go through the menu of good stuff, consider the obvious and see where there is some loot to be made:

Rugby
At half-time in the match between SA and Ireland last week, we tweeted, “Our Betmasters Treble is looking good!” Just 45 minutes later we were wiping pie off our face! Well, can it happen again. Murphy’s Law says no, but then again Murphy was an Irishman so there will be takers of 3-1 about Ireland to repeat their feat. We’re happy to give the Boks another chance, their current odds of 2-7 is better than last week’s 1-20 – still way too short but we’ll use Alistair Coetzee’s squad in a treble again to recover losses.

Motor Racing
The inaugural European Grand Prix is scheduled for Baku in Azerbaijan this weekend. Best odds available should be 33-1 on anyone alive who can tell us where Azerbaijan is! Seriously though, a two-car race is predicted between team-mates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. As always, in a contest between a pair we’ll go for the longest-priced. That is Rosberg, at 22-10.

Golf
It’s US Open weekend and the customary good prices are available, even on the hot shots Jason Day and Jordan Spieth (13-2). Rory McIlroy is at 22-1, very tempting figures for a player of his quality, and among the higher-priced players Henrik Stenson (33-1) and Sergio Garcia (35-1) will have their supporters. Always hard to predict, but in the Majors the winners invariably come from one of the young legends. Rory, at 22-1, he’s our boy!

Soccer
We’ve already seen some riveting stuff in Euro 2016, close matches and good football and the weekend promises more of the same. (Roll On Premier League!) Italy is at 17-20 to beat Sweden this afternoon, not much wrong with that; while Spain is at 7- 20 to beat Turkey. We’re not going to look for upsets here. Combine the two mentioned favourites in a Treble with England to win Group B @ 2-7 for a combined 22-10.

Horse Racing
There are four Pick 6 Carryovers this weekend, the biggest pool expected is the one at Turffontein on Saturday, which starts with a pool of R400,000 and should grow to near R2-million. Jack Milner of Racing Express describes this as a “tricky card” – with respect to Jack, do any other forms of horseracing cards exist? – but he does recommend considering Mike Azzie’s runner Awesome Adam (Race 5) and Sean Tarry’s Hyaku in (Race 7) as potential bankers.

Cricket
You have until Sunday to bet on your choice for Long-Term winner in the Tri-Nations Series. Australia is at 7-10, South Africa at 12-10 and West Indies at 13-2.

Weekend Treble:
In picking something from this mixed bag of sporting goodies, how about the Boks to redeem themselves against Ireland (2-7), onto Nic Rosberg to win the Euro GP (22-10) and Spain to beat Turkey (7- 20). That’s a solid 9-2. Will we be smiling all the way to the bank?

We bid you, sports fans, a weekend of note.
