Quick question from a concerned, logical, level headed person. 210mm of rain fell over Greyville on Friday/Saterday, now if we have 5/6 days of hottish weather and wind why wouldnt the track be fine for racing this Friday ? The track is f...... thats why and even more so because of an idiot irrigating it to such an extent before racing last Friday. The track took a hammering last Friday night !! This at the start of the season. Doesnt the track manager check the weather rapport ? If he did and still irrigated then the track is not draining properly (as has been the case for years), and he should know this, then he should not have irrigated so much prior to racing. Heads should roll and the quicker this is done IMO the better for Natal racing.
Excuses, excuses, excuses,(every year) call me a whinger call me me what you like but surely there is someone in GC country with half a brain with some logic ?!

Hi guys , response from GC
There was no irrigation on the turf track during the week prior to this weekend’s race meeting at Greyville. The (7-day) irrigation of 15 mm referred to in the track report was done on Friday 29 April. We then had rain on Saturday 30 April (20mm’s) and again on Tuesday 3 May (3 mm’s) but NO irrigation was put down AFTER Friday 29 April. We were well aware of the forecast of heavy rain for this past weekend, in fact we feared it might come early enough to interfere with Friday’s racing, but fortunately the heavens waited until shortly after the last race before opening up.
The pen reading was 23 (average) for the race meeting on Friday and I am not understanding on what basis that comments like “the track took a hammering” are being made. We are happy with the track but have made the precautionary decision not to race on the turf this coming Friday as the 4 races that were due to be held on the grass are of a “minor” nature. There is no doubt that it will take some time for the 208mms of rain to properly dissipate and rather than make a late call, we decided to make the decision to switch these four races to the Polytrack prior to final declarations this morning so that all owners and trainers knew exactly where they stood.

I was there Friday night and obvisously the going was "sticky" from the dew.
The horses were running a spoor in the grass also caused by the "dew". The kick back around the turn/finish area probably also the "dew". or worst of all I am in urgent need of an optometrist. It is clear just check your replays especially the head-on in slow mo (I admit I cant make out the line of where the poly starts) probably also the dew.......
With that visible amount of kick-back all over the track I logically concluded the track took a hammering. Sorry I dont buy it.

I wasn't there on Friday 6th, but have spoken to trainers who were there.
Comparative times for races on 20/4 and 6/5 :
1200m
6/5. 70.44; 73.88 ; 76.63
20/4. 71.22; 70.81; 70.56. ; 69.50
1600m
6/5. 97.52; 98.63; 98.97
20/4 96.70; 98.60; 99.28
According to the GC reply, there was 20mm of rain on 20th.
Average times were faster on 20th than 6th, bearing in mind also that the 1600m races on the 6th were higher class contests.
These results support the view that the going on 6th was somewhat softer than on 20th.

PeterD I'm sorry but your comparisons are not convincing. You 1200m comparison; the 1st one on the 6th is faster then the rest slower. How were the other races run?
In your 1600m comparisons even less convincing. The times differed by less than 1 second.
What were the wind directions and speeds for the respective meetings?
As you can see from my post count I'm relatively new to the site, I read more than I post.
However, it does seem that on some occasions various contributors hate the truth getting in the way of a good story!

Dilligaf, as you have read a lot on this forum you would realise both Peter D and myself are journalists that thrive on sensationalism and having a go at GC on a regular basis.
Enough mud slinging we will leave that to the track and the horses. I truely hope the track stands up for the season as the Natal Winter Season is for me by far the spectacle of SA racing and a true reflection of our horseflesh and their ability.

Hi D, both Peter D and Neigh have many horses running in KZN and very rarely comment on "issues"

I am glad that the track managers have broad shoulders to take some of the things said about them( some must be very close to libellous). I don't think that people who do not actually work with the course actually realize everything that goes on. Remember that GC brought in all the top guys from around the country to look and make suggestions on how to get Greyville perfect again and even they could not come close to agreeing. At least 4 different opinions if I remember correctly. Some of the abuse that they have taken is disgusting.
