TRAINER Kobus Roux has been warned off after his runner, Tara’s Flight, tested positive for a banned substance.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2010
The National Horseracing Authority (NHA) confirms that at an inquiry held last Friday, Roux was found guilty of a contravention of Rule 73.2.4 in that he was the person responsible for the horse, Tara’s Flight, at the time when a specimen taken from this horse after it had participated in and won Race 9 run at Arlington Racecourse on 11 June 2010, disclosed upon analysis the presence of Flunixin and Furosemide, which are prohibited substances in terms of the Rules of the National Horseracing Authority.

Taking into consideration Roux’s previous contraventions of this same Rule over a period of five years, the Board imposed a penalty of a warning off. Roux has the right of appeal against the finding and the penalty imposed.

Further, in terms of Rule 72.3.2 Tara’s Flight has been disqualified from that race.

In another incident jockey Andrew Fortune fell afoul of the authorities for dropping his hands before the finishing line when riding African Love in Race 2 at Turffontein on Saturday 4 August and received a one-month suspension as well as a R30,000 fine.

Fortune failed to ride out the horse by putting his hands down approximately three strides before the finish line, thereby costing himself third place. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
R10,000 of the fine has been suspended for a period of 12 months, provided he is not found guilty of a similar offence in that period.

Fortune has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.

Jockeys Felix Coetzee and Karl Neisius also received short suspensions. Coetzee’s ban emanates from the day he rode at Kranji in Singapore on 3 September where he was charged with causing interference while riding Incognito in Race 4.

At the inquiry held in Singapore Coetzee pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of the charge. He was suspended from riding in races for a period of 10 days – from 8 to 17 September – both days inclusive.

In terms of the international agreement on racing and breeding, the Singapore Turf Club has requested the NHA to reciprocate this penalty and as a result Coetzee is suspended from riding for the same time period in South Africa.

Neisius was found guilty of causing interference while riding Mainspring in Race 9 at Kenilworth on 4 September and handed a one-week ban. Neisius pleaded not guilty to the charge and has the right of appeal against both the finding and the penalty imposed.
