That would be disasterous.
We need to get our house in order, starting with Mbeki and Mugabe heeding the will of their electorate and stepping down.
This will enable millions of Zimbabweans to go back home.
A just, humane, properly monitored policy on foreigners adopted, prioritize job creation and service provision for our deprived, expectant populace.
Wont happen overnight but if we start today, albeit 15 years too late, we can resurrect our beautiful country.

What would the financial implications be - would we have half built stadiums like the highway in Cape Town - very worrying indeed

The 2010 World Cup will be held in SA. Only a major natural disaster will stop it from going ahead. I believe that SA will hold a supurb tournament just like it did the rugby and cricket world cups, although the amount fans the participating countries will bring with them will run into the 10s of thousands.

I also think it highly unlikely they would take the WC away but perhaps it would do no harm for Fifa to exert as much pressure as possible as well as the UN sports advisor.

Interesting story either way, thanks Brent.

I agree its unlikely they will take it away but it would be interesting to get some economists opinions on "what if"?
May make an interesting story and I will look into it.

On another note guys how about a couple of winners for the show?

Going to be giving Euro 2008 some mileage tomorrow
