What Would Happen If..........?
8 years 10 months ago
I was wondering what the impact on SA racing would be if all owners were restricted to no more than, say, 10 horses each? This could be in the form of 10 full shares or fractions amounting to no more than 10 full shares when the fractions were added together.
In recent years we have seen ownership become more & more concentrated in the hands of a few. Whether this is good or bad I cannot say but what do clan members believe might transpire if it was not possible?

In my opinion more would be achieved to limit trainers to 60 horses. If you have owners who can afford many horses, they should not be restricted. Trainers who have satellite yards with assitants running them make absolutely no sense.

Agree with you!
a)When I got my colours many years ago ,colours were issued with limits on number of horses/shares based on the jockey club assessment of affordability(if the NHA did that racing would have less of the credit control issues)
b)If I pay a premium to have my horse trained by a successful trainer,I would prefer not to get the services of what is tantamount to a franchisee!!

Agree with you OTA & Rob, there should not be trainers with over 100 horses.... I don't see how that actually works. Stop satellite yards and limit the amount of horses trainers have, leave ownership unlimited.

I agree lets punish people who are successful in life by curtailing their growth at the same time lets tell the original owners of the spur nandos steer debonairs mr exhaust etc etc etc that they aren't allowed to open elsewhere and are restricted to having one store..owners are entitled to have horses with whom they want and there are plenty satellite yards that are successfully run for example the tarry yard in Durban the kanemeyer yard in Durban the snaith yard in pe the gavin van zyl yard in pe etc etc etc..the sooner a yard like Duncan howells opens a yard in joburg the better as when he looks at the race program in natal from now to the end of the year his remaining hair will fall out ...its ok for capitalism to prosper in other industries but not horseracing  owners will cotton on quickly if the satellite yards aren't performing and they will take necessary action but they are entitled to have a choice of trainer

what is exactly the job of a horse trainer? limiting owners would in effect only affect/upset the kings of the sport on whom the entire industry relies.

You will note I said .." I would prefer...."- I have a right to "prefer" I guess! :woohoo:
(Greg Blank and partners moved all horses from MdK as soon as he was not personally training them-I am told they preferred not to pay a premium for hands on unless they got it!)
The beauty of free enterprise!

Although the circumstances (number of race days and races annually) are very different owners are limited to a certain number of horses in Hong Kong.
I guess they argue that this will force owners to only bring better horses to this centre which is a positive for the quality of racing and betting activities.
The down side is that smaller interest will be squeezed out which in my opinion is contrary to what the sport requires in our country.

But why Garrick?
We are a country that breeds the thoroughbred. Presumably you propose this as a solution to a problem, can you state the problem to which this would be the best solution? I will give you my rebuttal upfront: there are just so many private rights of other people you are running over with this proposal i imagine the original problem would be better to just endure.
(PS how does restricting some people make others (presuming they stay rational) buy more?)

Quality over Quantity? or are both possible, Garrick? A true meritocracy system works like a pyramid. Picture it. The bottom tier is the widest, the top pinnacle tiny and exclusive.
It is possible in an established market. But the market here is skewered and still developing and many decades away from being that pyramid.
