Candice Dawson landed the biggest prize of her new career as a licensed trainer when winning the R200,000 Non-Black Type Racing Association (RA) Mile in front of throngs of enthusiastic racing fans in Kimberley on Saturday.

The the RA Mile on Saturday saw the six-year-old Maine Chance Farms-bred Fort Wood gelding Sundari, who is owned by J and K Ralphs and LP Ralphs, relished the return to a sand surface. Two of his previous three career wins had been on the Vaal sand. He was backed in from 25/1 to 16/1. SA Triple Crown-winning jockey Karl Zechner made up some ground on the turn and the blinkered gelding was poised to strike entering the straight. He then moved up powerfully to catch the Corrie Lensley-trained Jaguar and won going away by 1,2 lengths. The Prinsloo-trained Samogan stayed on strongly for third ahead of Kingofmountain and Big Shot. The favourite Toro Rosso had moved up well from a handy position before his welter burden of 62kg became too much and he faded into 6th.
The occasion was made all the more memorable in that it happened at probably the most successful Flamingo Park Raceday of all time.
It was also a memorable weekend for local trainer Tienie Prinsloo and the Sportofkings.co.za ownership syndicate as their horse Lebeoana was not only named the Horse Of The Season at the Northern Cape RA Awards on Friday night but he then landed the R100,000 Non-Black Type RA Diamond Stayers on Saturday too.
Local trainer Corrie Lensley was also celebrating as his charge One Cool Kat won the R135,000 World Sports Betting Sprint.
The on course Tote Turnover was up 70% on last year and some spoke of it being the biggest crowd they had seen at the Kimberley racecourse.
The Kimberley Town and Country market provided a definite draw card and was a resounding success. Biltong, clothing, pancakes, samoosas and an array of crafts could be purchased and all involved said they were keen to do it again next year. The grand stands were packed and the kids enjoyed the carousels and jumping castles.
At the awards ceremony at The Kalahari Hotel on Friday evening Muzi Yeni was named Northern Cape Champion Jockey, Matt Thackeray Champion Apprentice, Tienie Prinsloo Champion Trainer and Ron Harris Champion owner. Lebeoana was then announced Horse Of The Season in the most anticipated award.
