JOCKEYS SPONSORS
8 years 8 months ago
Do jockeys have the right to promote their sponsors when they are paid by the owner to ride their horses in a race and paid by the Operator per ride?
The jockey is contracted to ride the mount by the trainer & owner and yet they wear their sponsors caps and give their sponsors airtime during an interview and have their breeches printed with the sponsors logo.
Sooner or later there is going to be a contractual & legal problem surrounding this along with a few other anomalies that are taken as normal in the SA horse racing arena.

Glad some said something. As a punter and a viewer the on going endless thanks is just sickeningly boring.
It's more acceptable from the young jocks or new trainers, completely understandable. But to hear Delpech and co. whine their grovelling about stallions etc is like watching a dog having a shit.

"don`t mention your sponsor in the interview"
"i`ll buy you new breeches for when you ride my horse"
then ask the jock if he agrees to these conditions , if you really want the jock to ride and he says NO to the conditions ?
ps jocks only get paid when they mention, some jocks charge R1000+ a winner

JCL, it's not skulduggery.....CONFLICT OF INTEREST is something that seems normal in SA Racing.
My point though is why would anyone have to negotiate with the jockey as to what to wear? The simple rule of "You pay, You say" should apply or should we ask the jockeys to make up the rules?

To answer the question!......
NHA rule 21.6 states:
No JOCKEY shall carry any form of advertising material on any part of his clothing or equipment whilst on a RACECOURSE during a RACEMEETING save on the terms and conditions ,as approved by the RACING OPERATORS,from time to time.
......the term from time to time was originally to cater for big sponsor days (ie wearing Rothmans stuff on July day) but has now become "all the time"
I reiterate my continual moan ..........amend the rules ,delete the rules or enforce the rules .......ignoring them is not an option!!!!!
I dont think most of the NHA even know what rules exist.
(Like Tigershark ,I am not accusing anybody ,but isn't bookmakers sponsoring jocks and stables a bit like the traffic police being sponsored by a taxi association...lol)

Before the conspiracy antennas start to quiver and vibrate in excitement, no bookmakers sponsor any jockeys. Jockeys are forbidden in terms of their licence.
