Seems quite low ?

Very low Bob,compare those numbers to countries that breed horses to eat, which doesn't happen in the UK.
Surprisingly ITALY consumes the most horse meat in Europe,I bet that fact by passed some.

In 2005, the eight principal horse meat-producing countries produced over 700,000 tonnes of this product.

Major Horse meat Production Countries

Country.number of animals tonnes
China 1,700,000 204,000
Mexico 626,000 78,876
Kazakhstan 340,000 55,100
Mongolia 310,000 38,000
Argentina 255,000 55,600
Italy 213,000 48,000

That's 213,000 horses slaughtered in Italy in ONE year.

I wonder how these figures stack up when compared to sheep, pigs, chickens and cattle? Let's not get emotional about this, humans are carnivores and horses are part of this supply chain.

On a positive note. The majority of trainers and stable staff look after their horses with great care and they suffer the most when an accident happens.
If you delve into those stats, theirs some unbelievable figures.Instead of looking for the bad theirs plenty of good.Take Lingfields All Weather course, there has been ONE fatality in those timescales, that was in 2009 when the South African bred Kayak suffered a broken leg going down to the start prior to its race. That injury could have happened to any horse at anytime.
