Vaal Thursday Race Previews by David Thiselton

Race 1:

Preview: OSCULATION has run some fair races over this trip and doesn’t have a lot to beat, although she has a tricky draw by trends. CLAREMORRIS stayed on over 1200m last time around the Inside track turn after being handy from a plum draw and has a chance in this weak field. PRINCESSS ROCHELLE has run two fair races over 1000m and 1200m respectively and as one who probably prefers the latter trip she should be staying on although her draw is tricky. SILVER JAY ran a fair race from a tough draw over this trip last time and has another tough draw. CLARET CUP hasn’t been disgraced in two starts but has a another tough draw to contend with. FREE THE WIND is by Windrush and is a half-sister to the Gr 3-winning sprinter Bull Valley, but she does have a tricky draw on debut. (David Thiselton 4-3-13)

Race 2:

Preview: SEATTLE SINGER, second in a Gr 1 against the boys, gets a plum draw over a suitable trip and will be hard to beat. REBEL TO THE FORE is officially the best in at the weights and has shown class, but this is her first outing for a year-and-a-half, although coming from the Tarry yard she should be fit enough. WATER LILY LAKE has shown ability in all three of her starts and could surprise. (David Thiselton 3-1-4)

Race 3:

Preview: CATHEDRAL COUNTRY by champion sire Trippi is a half-sister to Grand Heritage winner Irish Pride and would not have to be any great shakes to win this race so must have a shout from a plum draw with Delpech up. DAWNBREAKER is also by Trippi and is a half-sister to a number of winners so can also do well here from a plum draw under Gavin Lerena. PSYCHIC by Visionaire is a half-sister to the staying type Witchcraft, so likely needs further, but she does have a plum draw. MAN AT WAR by Stretegic News is a full-sister to multiple bread-and-butter winners Strategic Move and Strategic’s Pride. FORT INFINITY has some fair form over sprints but has a tricky draw. RIVERS EDGE by Curved Ball out of a Badgerland maiden is likely to need further. (David Thiselton 7-8-10)

Race 4:

Preview: The quirky SMARTIFACT is known to have plenty of ability so over a too sharp trip he is interesting running in this weak field in his first start since February, especially considering he probably needed the rest to sort out his issues. JOEY PIPER is by Argonaut out of the five-time winner from 1200-1600m Jo Piper, who was merit rated 99. RED REBEL has run some fair races and could earn from a fair draw. CLEVER GUY is by Argonaut and is a half-brother to a couple of winners so is interesting in this field from a plum draw with Gavin Lerena up. BAY STYLE could earn if repeating his best run, which was over this trip. (David Thiselton 1-8-2)

Race 5:

Preview: PERSIAN APPROVAL is knocking on the door over this trip and can get it right in this field. URBAN MYTH, having just his second start last time, stayed on from a wide draw over 1450m and should appreciate this step up in trip from a fair draw. BRADWELL BAY could improve in his second start and has a plum draw. (David Thiselton 8-10-5)

Race 6:

Preview: BANKING APRIL has improved and has a chance again from a plum draw despite an eight point raise. TIGER FLAME could earn from a good draw off a reduced merit rating. JIN-GO-LA-BA had consistent form without blinkers and they are now off over a suitable trip after a below par run over shorter. (David Thiselton 3-1-2)

Race 7:

Preview: ANALYSE THIS ran a cracker in the Grand Heritage and will appreciate the step up in trip from a plum draw. BOLD REX showed improvement in his second run after gelding and is four points higher for that win but is drawn well over a suitable trip and is going the right way. TRIP TO TROY won well last time despite not striding out and has Strydom up, albeit carrying 0,5kg overweight, off a four point higher mark from a tricky draw. (David Thiselton 4-5-6)

Race 8:

Preview: The talented REFUGE had a tough draw last time but now has a plum draw over a suitable trip and Strydom significantly remains aboard. TRIP TO PARADISE has good form at the Vaal lately and is drawn on the right side over an ideal trip. BLUE DIAMOND ROAD might appreciate the step down in trip having moved up well over 1600m last time and then finding no extra. (David Thiselton 1-3-4)

Race 9:

Preview: BEING FABULOUS was backed in on debut and went close and will now relish the step up in trip from a fair draw. ROUGE ALLURE is knocking on the door over this trip and has a plum draw. OH MY DARLING stayed on over this trip on debut in July and is drawn well. (David Thiselton 6-3-10)
