Depend on how you look at it. Small in terms of horses owned but can be expensive or an owner can have numerous horses which are not pricey.

My assumption these July winners can be classified as "Small owners" at that time.

2001 - Trademark
2002 - Ipi Tombe
2005 -Dunford
2009 - Big City Life

You might be correct with quantity but financially , I think you are off the mark

Trademark I think was owned by Mike Bass and the owners of Olympic duel if I remember .

Ipi Tombe - Was a Zim bred owned by Sunmark who sold it Mr Mc Donald and the Sheik . Mr Mac owns ones of the Biggest electrical suppliers in Johannesburg and had a whole host of other horses with Buddy Maroun.

Dunford - Owned by Robert Bloomberg who is the Grand Son on the Mayor of Cape Town , has owned many top horses , he purchased the horse in Training and I am not sure at what cost but could not have been much. A very shrewed buy.

Big City Life - Glen bought on Spec and had a few owners including Raymond Deacon as one, his father owned plenty horses in his life .

So I am not sure if you are answering Deb'is question correctly

I will stand by my assumption as per the following owners when their won their races.

Trademark = Messrs M Barfoot, R J Bloomberg, P Georgas, M A Govender, T J Kerkmann & Mrs R C Kerkmann

Dunford (Bought at a sale after running a few races) = Messrs R J Bloomberg, R W Champion, P G Georgas & G J Wilson

Bass keeps stating that he never had big owners with purchasing power until Shirtliff came along.

Ipi Tombe = Messrs D Coleman, H W Leyenaar, S M Tomlinson & Sunmark Racing Syndicate

Cant remember if Ipi Tombe got sold prior to the July or just after that to Team Valor, Mr Barry Irwin.

Big City Life = Messrs H J Basson, R W Deacon, G A Hauptfleisch, G S Kotzen & G W Mitchell

What is perceived to be a big owner ? During Big City Life Win, Jaffees, Becks, Oppenheimers, Fieldspring Racing, Crabbia, Van Niekerk and Jooste was getting well established, the Sheiks was getting into the act into South Africa.

Remember also you can be rich as Bill Gates and have one horse you will be classified as a small owner as you not investing in the game unless you bought "The Green Monkey" to make the breeders rich!!!!!

Thanks Naresh

You hit it on the head " What is a small owner ?" the million dollar question. All owners pay same fee for RA membership All owners pay the same fee with the NHA

Is Dave Scott a small owner just an example B) , is the guy with 10 % in some horse with Green Street Bloodstock a Small Owner - Or is Robert Bloomberg a mall owner at the moment , he has shares in about 5 horses or something, Or is Larry a small owner being a partner in the Filly that won a group 3 and one or two more.

True - You just have to look at the owners of Live Life .

Lets use me as an example - Am I a small or big owner -

I have had my colours since 1998 - My first horse won 3 races and cost me R9 K at the time. 18 Years down the line , I have had over 150 wins either in partnership or on my own. I have won 3 Listed Races , 2 Group 3's , 2 Group 2 's and run 2nd & 3rd in a Group 1 with two different horses .

I did not inherit any money , I worked hard and got lucky . I have had 2 Mares that have sold very well which helped pay the bills . The one mare in fact was Demanding Lady who had a colt by Trippi sell at Book one the other day for nearly R6 Million.

So am I a big or small owner ?

Bob

RD is a personal friend and had a few in partnership with him. Ask him what the best thing he ever did in his life . He will tell you I got out. He loves his racing still goes to the course but now he travels with his wife all over the world and is the happiest man alive.

And the dominos will carry on dropping the way racing is going , you get to a stage where you have achieved most challenges and then that's it. I am almost their . Half way out , going on Holiday with Raymond and Paula soon.

That a hard question to answer.

How many horses do you have at any given time and how much will you have paid for them ?

That's a hard question stop counting a long time ago , some were on the farms at stages, some are in training, some are home bred. So I have no idea.

The moral of the story I was very Lucky. You need luck and work hard , but I am a small owner that's all I can say . I never get invited or looked after as if I was a big owner , the only time any sales company took notice of me was when they invited me to the Lanzerac Hotel because I had 2 runners in the first Million Rand Race.

No big deal - that's why there are no small or big owners , we are all owners and pay the same , so should all be treated the same .

What Debi was refering to was the article in the SP -

Racing Association CEO Larry Wainstein has pointed out that it is the Racing Association that governs all stake money paid to owners and it is them that foot the bill.
When the decision was made to double the stakes for the Sun Met from R2.5 million to R5 million and to boost the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate from R1-million to R1.5 million it was the RA that had to find the money.
“That money does not come from the sponsors. When a request was made to up the stakes on those races the guys came to me to see if we could afford it. I’m not trying to blow our own trumpet but I regularly get questioned by RA members who feel we don’t do enough for them. I just believe there is a need to set the record straight.”

I was a very small owner - now I am a minute owner - and very happy that not one Rand of the millions that the RA used to subsidize the big guys came from my pocket
